TM#210: a glimpse of the future.

The Watch Tower of Amon Sul.

That is what Strider called this place. He almost spoke of it with a reverent undertone. Not much to look at this broken down tumble of ruins. Uncle Bilbo mentioned it once in his tales, I think. Before he met the trolls he spoke of ruins on the hills near the roads.. Was this part of his tale? Stupid cold. We should have departed sooner in the year. Summer's heat right now would be a welcome warmth over this bone chilling dark. I would rather tuck up closer to a fireplace in Bag End then be sitting waiting for the dark shadows we saw upon the road earlier this evening.

Amon Sul?

Why does the name sound familiar? Like a shadow of a dream.. Like a mention was perhaps made between he and Gandalf under the quiet sleeping ears of a hobbit that fell asleep leaning against the elder hobbits leg. What was it that Bilbo and Gandalf had been discussing that night.. It would have been something that had caught this young hobbit ears at the time. Food.. Drink.. Elves? Those conversations were much too common.. No something more near and dear would make this sleepy hobbit perk up to listen more fully.. They were discussing rocks? Crystals?

The seeing stones..

Yes! That's it! Seven stones.. Stones that you could see the future in. What a glorious thought! You could peer into the heart of a crystal and see the greenery of The Shire in years to come. What I wouldn't give this night to peer ahead to see the end of our journey in Rivendell. I could watch the elves laughing and teasing us much as they had Bilbo upon his entry into the fair valley.

A stone I could see in..

Blue eyes dart around the small area that we had made our encampment for the night and ran up the path of the hill to the top again. Gandalf had told Uncle Bilbo that one of the stones lay buried up there deep in the ruins. If Strider were not so watchful this night I would have liked to returned to the ruined shells of the tower and searched for the stone that they talked of. I bet I could find it. I have a knack for finding stones, what an additional gift to take with us into Rivendell for Elrond! Perhaps that was why Gandalf was here a few days before us? Maybe he too sought this ancient seeing stone? With luck he has recovered it and will cause him to arrive once again, just in time, to rescue us from some dreadful trolls.

But what would I look for given the chance to look into it?

Not something simple like: "when would we make it back home?" Since the answer to that is an obvious one of "after we give the One Ring up to Elrond and the elves in Rivendell." My eyes fall upon one of my companions and causes a softer smile to make it's way across my face as I pulled my cloak tighter around me. I think I would look for happiness for my dear Samwise. With him reaching out, perhaps shyly in the beginning, to take my hand.

And not be afraid to hold onto it.
