Every so often, if you are very very lucky, you go out to a gig to see a mate's band and have a seminal musical experience. Tonight was one of those times.
The gig at the Ex (Exeter Hall as was) opened with my first ever proper live rap experience. But it wasn't Eminem, NWA or other heroes of my youf-type style. Closest to Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy but all British.
Lyrics. Presence. Effect. Aesthetics. Athletics.
Fast fast fists, fast fast lips.
OK, I was predisposed towards the highly photogenic twenty-something soloist when he stepped onstage, but by the time he was done he could have been Quasimodo and had the same effect. I can't remember the last time I was so impressed by an artist - never mind Oxford, I'm thinking V festival etc. He has all the skills, all the passion, all the eloquence and it would be a cultural crime if he fails to break through. Catch him on myspace: he is
Mr Shaodow.
Listen to the sound on his Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mrshaodowFacebook group.
No web domain of his own yet - anyone feeling generous with their time/expertise?
Check him out before success plucks him away from this town.
btw, despite the God credit this is not Christian Rap - would I do that to you?
The next two bands were also impressive. I now have too much local music to follow.
Dead Letter Society were all contemporary rock/pop with a pleasant Placebo/Muse edge. Well presented, even if the sound system wasn't doing them any particular favours.
Space Heroes of the People filled the gap The Egg left when they vanished (although the sound is not similar) and left me full of bounce. I definitely have a soft spot for a band with an electric double bass.
Easy Tiger (the headline act) I can skip, but they are very competent and fans of The Who should definitely check them out.
I would willingly go to a gig to see any of the bands listed above, except the last, but want to chase after Mr Shaodow's appearances (if only I were a decade younger) and Space Heroes. Watch this space - I will be posting gigs I'm going to.
Too much Magmers (in the absence of better cider). Retreat now.
