Heroes/Dark Material Crossover Info

Mar 11, 2010 22:47

I often have these weird crossover ideas for things, but this one means I need to put a little bit of thought and info into it.. not much, but I still tried even I'm not sure it's makes 100% sense.

For daemons to fit into the Heroes universe with the fact there is no central power like the Magisterium and the powers held by most of the main characters, there need to be a few changes. The basics would be the same, but others would have to be different to work.

Human and Dæmon Deaths
In Philip Pullman's books, "When a person dies, their dæmon appears to fade away, like "atoms of smoke."", likewise when a dæmon is killed, their death is described "as the dæmon bursting into golden light" to which their human dies soon after.
However considering how often characters in Heroes die and just taking into account modern medicine where people can be revived after death, this needs to be tweaked a little. Thus instead of when their human dies, the dæmon fading right away, they would instead fade slowly over the course of a few day, fading until they are gone. Though if a dæmon is killed, the reaction is likely the same, the human either dying slowly unable to cope without their dæmon; or if they manage to survive, they are a mere shell of a person and who they used to be.

Separation & Distance
Excepting for witches and shamans who have gone through specials rituals to gain the ability to go far distances from their dæmons and still be connected at the soul, in Philip Pullman's books, a dæmon must stay close to their human. The exact distance is not stated, but it is implied it is not very far.
However, considering some of the abilities of Heroes characters, this would be a severe disadvantage and make quite a few powers mere hindrances to be endured rather then the useful power it could be (ex: flight if the person doesn't have a bird dæmon or speed). So while the everyday person still has this "distance cap" so to speak, those born as Specials with abilities are able to go great distances from their dæmons with no ill effect. This is caused by a change in the evolved human's DNA that is speculated to have something to do with the same changes in DNA that cause the Specials to have their abilities in the first place.
People with synthetic abilities are a grab bag weather or not their dæmon will be able to go long distances from him, but for the most part the change to their DNA the injection causes seems to grant them the long distance separation just the same as a person born with their abilities. Currently all people with known synthetic abilities are able to go great distances away.
All people with abilities, natural or synthetic, try to act as if they cannot however because to see a person without their dæmon is like "seeing a person without a face, utterly wrong somehow". This is ingrained in most people from childhood, so they hide this talent.

Of couse, all the dæmons are the opposite gender as their human
There are a lot more characters, but these are the only ones I really care/know anything at all about right now. I will be adding to this list later, probably
Since I'm not totally familiar with the characters of Heroes, I'm not 100% on some of the dæmons fitting (ie most of them) but I swear I had a reason for the dæmon forms (and names) I picked, even if it might not make sense
Sylar's dæmon is what it is because it would have settled when he was still Gabriel Gray and as far as I know, nothing can happen to make a person's settled dæmon change
