I suppose the good news is my molars aren't as bad as I thought. They can save 2 of them. However, 17 cavities, one impacted canine, and deep cleaning and scaling to the tune of almost $2400 is enough to make me want to cry

um.. that sounded just like it was supposed to.. kind of. *blushes*
but.. face it. If everyone could remove their own impacted and cracked teeth, then we wouldn't need dentists, and could save the money.
.... I was waiting for my Dentists license to come in the mail, though. The School of CrackerJack Box was sending it out just as soon as the check for $19..95 cleared...
Ditto Ren. I guess that's why we're supposed to go get 'em checked & cleaned every six months. Uffda. I'm **so** sorry. My sis is facing $800 of work in the next week for one cracked tooth. It does sound like your dentist is willing to do payment plans, for which I at least am very grateful.
Don't forget the clove oil.
And when they're out, use a well-soaked hot black tea bag as a compress (close your mouht gently with the tea bag pressing on/in the gap. The tannins and what not in black tea help stop bleeding very quickly. I did this when my wisdom teeth were taken out. (All 4, two one side before Xmas '94, other two after... the top two had prevented the bottom two from coming all the way in, and they kept getting infections behind them. One of 'em took some jaw with it, so we had a nice gap back there and two stitches... **yay** tea bags...)
