I've been so busy since Friday I haven't had time to LJ about this -_- But I do now.
^ He's taaaaaaall. o_O
So the lunch happened at the Allen Center, which is one of the buildings for business sudents, which means it's all nice and fancy and has professional-looking people walking around it. Us theatre folks felt like total infiltraters, even though most of us looked nice-ish.
Anyway, we waited around about 20 minutes before Rives, the head of the department, showed up with five of the other actors from The Express and... Mr. Clancy Brown.
He was in a good humor the whole time; when all the students lined up to shake hands with him he said to one person, "Thank you for coming to the wedding." XD And we kinda just... ate lunch and chatted. We went around the circle to introduce ourselves; my intro was, "Emily, Junior theatre major from New York. Big fan of Carnivale." I heard him rumble a "thank you" off to my left :D
Lunch went on. Nervous little bunny that I am, I had to work up the courage to talk one-on-one with him, but finally I found an in for my question about speech-making: seeing as he's played a preacher, and I'm about to play Lenin. "Well, it's not really about making a speech, is it," he said, "It's just the script. You have to get into the flow of it." Really, the toughest part of speechifying for him was that it was television-- things were constantly being re-written, and sometimes he'd have to shoot the end of a scene first and then go back to the beginning. He said something to the effect of, "It's Stoppard. You'll be fine." He seemed impressed with 'Travesties' in general, said it was a great play. So I gave him a flier. Apparently he'll be going home by this weekend, but at least he seemed genuinely interested in coming.
Also, he did NOT in fact know what they called him on Television Without Pity. I am quite proud to have been the one to inform him, and quite glad he found it amusing ^____^
After lunch we all ambled along the lakefill back to the theatre building, and stopped to look at the monster-fish in the pond. Then a few of us students tagged along while Rives gave Clancy and his buddies a tour of the building. In the hall we were chatting a bit more about 'Travesties', and then we walk right by my director!!! I pointed her out, and Clancy turns toward her and says, "You'd better be doing a good job. It's a great play." So now Katy says she's been telling people that she got scared by Clancy Brown. Hee!
Finally before I scurried off, I told him about Code Monkey Dance. Cause really, I couldn't not-- as soon as my grandma hears that I met a TV actor, her first question will be, "Did you mention Code Monkey?" and if I hadn't I'd feel bad for not at least making the attempt. But I was doing my nervous bunny thing again then, and midway through my spiel he actually said "Stop shaking" and kinda grabbed my hand. Stupid nerves. But at least I told him! :D
So that was my Clancy Brown encounter. I still kind of squee thinking about it ^________^
