Believe it or not I was actually considering doing this exact post today at work, 'cause I wanted to sort out my list. That's amazing.
10. The Rocky Horror Show I'm putting this low because frankly it probably sucks as a stage musical, particularly nowadays when they fling lots of money at it and schmaltz it up. But the movie rocks, and the songs are great.
9. The Producers I have not actually seen the show, but I have heard the soundtrack, and the new "Springtime for Hitler" alone is enough to give this a spot on anyone's list.
8. Les Miserables Contains "Master of the House"-the Broadway song that even people who hate Broadway love. That is all. (Other songs good too, to varying degrees.)
7. Fiddler on the Roof Quite possibly the best dialogue (!) I've heard coming out of a musical, and the songs just make this gentile want to get up and dance.
6. The Phantom of the Opera Schmaltzy at times, but takes one of the strangest things to base a musical on and tells a sad story of an unloved man.
5. Little Shop of Horrors Pure fun with a genuinely touching story and verrrry singable songs.
4. Into the Woods Amazing story - one of the few stories in a musical I think could work as a stage play - incredibly clever lyrics and a few punches in the gut along the way.
3. Rent A modern rock musical that mixes the styles and survives to tell the tale. Plot from Puccini a bit melodramatic, and you can never quite love this show as much as you did in high school, but the songs still rock.
2. Jesus Christ Superstar Brave, bold, emotional, creepy, scary, intelligent, biting... God, what an incredible show. Can't say much more than that.
1. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Pure fun. There isn't much of a plot and the show is over in about six minutes, but the music is just so bouncy and happy, and the lyrics are funny as hell.
