Here's an appendix to the story:

I could write you a description of the charm and badge and their properties etc, but the school did it already, so I’ll save myself some bother and just give you my letter. - E

RE: Drain-Dry Protection Charms and Donor Badges

Dear Parents,

Please find attached the kit list for your son/daughter’s first year at Beelzebub’s.

Also enclosed are the Drain-Dry Protection Charm that the school requires all students and teachers to wear at all times, and the associated Donor Badge. Following is an explanation of both items.

The Charm’s main purpose is to keep pupils from losing too much blood to a vampire, whether by forceful attack or consenting donation. This must be worn whenever on the school grounds, and can be worn during the holidays if preferred. Obviously, the school tries its hardest to minimise the chance of assault, but precautions must be taken.

The Badge, however, signifies that a pupil is willing to supply blood to another student. This is a personal choice for each person, and it is likely that only close friends will ever use the opportunity. The Badge has no protective powers of its own, so must be used in conjunction with the charm.

If a pupil is found without their charm, they will be given a warning, but it is hoped that no pupil will put himself or herself in the danger of serious blood loss.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Irina Hackleberry

Headmistress of Beelzebub’s College for the Sinister Arts
