So today, a list of 21 Happy Things:
1. At TONMOcon I saw a talk by Jim Cosgrove, and now that I told him I found two fishes in the stomachs of my squids, he's going to look up the museum collection codes for me so I can get the stomach contents from the first appearance of Humboldt squid in BC! This is epic!
2. Josie e-mailed me this link, I got mentioned (though not by name) in the Globe and Mail
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/meet-the-red-devil-of-the-sea/article1328640/"The [Humboldt squid stomach contents] will soon make a transcontinental journey to a keen undergraduate studying marine biology at the University of Guelph."
3. I woke up and ate some pie and a popsicle for breakfast and it was amazing.
4. I took my rats out for two hours and Mary-Jane fell asleep in my plaid shirt, while I lay in bed listening to music. Even after September, when I had to wrap her in a towel and force drops in her eyes and smear honeyed medicine on her belly, she still loves me. I'm her safety.
5. My prof is awesome and happy these days and tells more stories.
6. My parents are currently on their way here with my sister, a six hour journey in the car just to see me.
7. I've e-mailed a couple of Steve O'Shea's students at AUT and they say it's worth the loans and hassle of paperwork to be in his lab because, though he expects a lot from you, he's the nicest and best supervisor.
8. Yesterday my prof told me I'm special. And not even eating-the-paste kind of special.
9. I took a hot shower and I'm wearing my favorite jeans and a shirt that makes me feel pretty.
10. Time is going at exactly the right pace. I like when I have long days. For me it's good and normal to be on campus for more than 12 hours and to love it. And there is nothing wrong with that. I don't want to have blue teeth.
11. No matter where you end up, friends are your family, and family is always where you last left them waiting for you to get home.
12. John thinks lol stands for lots of love, and that's adorable.
13. Somewhere someone understands exactly what you're going through, with 6 billion people on the planet, you are never alone.
14. There is hope that I will be able to sort out the Eurybia taxonomy, since John has been testing the usefulness of other genes.
15. John has to stay an extra semester, so he's not leaving in January!
16. I can make vegan pumpkin pie without soy that tastes like good.
17. I've accepted that because my 4 year old self wanted to be a kid forever, the idea of "growing up" is both silly and unnecessary.
18. There are THREE pies in my kitchen. And all of them are vegan.
19. If I become a Promethean I don't have to worry about the state of the world's oceans. I mean, I can't, but at least Sociology gives me the option.
20. Realizing that Sociology is fun to play with but not to marry. Science will stand by me through anything.
21. Everything becomes ok again, as long as you wait it out.
