Adam, our friend Victor who hosts Cult Classics, and I went on a road trip to Tucson theater The Loft to see Don Coscarelli's latest movie, John Dies at the End. I had skimmed the summary of the book, to prepare myself, and had glanced at the cast list on IMDb when I first heard of the event weeks ago. The two main characters, John and Dave (name changed because it would make him harder to find), I did not recognize from previous roles, but there were familiar faces such as Clancy Brown (as
Marconi, a role similar to Chevalier from Gentleman Broncos), Doug Jones (being able to see his face before his graceful, gangly motion threw me off a bit), and Paul Giamatti as Arnie. John and Dave were a bit of a Bill & Ted team at first, and I expected A Scanner Darkly vibe, based on what I read of it. Not at all. There is a street drug called "soy sauce" that our heroes discover at a yard party (a.k.a. "rave") where John is singing with his band, Three Arm Sally. The Jamaican dealer in question has more than meets the eye, and the plot really gets rolling at that point.
Remember the shit monster from Dogma? There's a better creature in this.
Think you've squeezed every bit of humor from a bratwurst? I bet this will surprise you.
The character Morgan Freeman, who looks and sounds nothing like Morgan Freeman, takes a step to the forefront for a portion of this.
And then there's the Mall of the Dead. Awesome.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1783732/ I enjoy movies where I alternately laugh my ass off, then react with disgust to the gore, and there were plenty of scenes with that juxtaposition. And as "suspicious diner," Dan Schweiger has a cameo. I recognized him as coroner 1 in Bubba Ho-Tep (scene with Daniel Roebuck), Dan in Free Enterprise, and my Facebook friends list. So silly and fun. And Tucson's only about 1 1/2 hours away, so we got home by 11pm.
