Today, my dad was telling me that one of his kids at work was talking about the XF, and how if it was coming out now it wouldn't be well received. He said that it only worked because of the interest in government conspiracies at the time. My dad said this in reply ( Read more... )

it isnt that the show wouldnt be well received, its that if television was as picky back then as it is now..it wouldnt have survived its first season.

these days all they care about is huge ratings out the gate that stay. its why so many shows (mostly on Fox..what a shock lol) dont even last 4 episodes and sometimes less than that.

the show didnt hit its stride til season 2 and wasnt a common place, mainstream hit til season 3 or 4. in today's tv landscape it would have never had time to grow which is pretty sad. but yes as the show kept going and grew, people grew to appreciate and love the chemistry and characters of those two so it totally made an impact. hence why season 9 is such a piece of shit. :P

of course its funny to see that person make that claim, seeing as how most if not all fantasy/sci-fi shows of the mid 90s and beyond owe their existence and/or longevity to popularity and quality of The X-Files. it opened the gate, before them most sci-fi fantasy shows were cheap and terrible shows. X-Files was argulably one of the first to show this sorta series treated properly and seriously with quality writing, acting and tv production.

these days you see so many people say "such and such show is like a mini movie every week" in regards to the production quality. X-Files was the first show to ever receive that sorta claim and praise.

i think i broke my soapbox so i will shush now. :P

but yay your dad!!!
