Snow in Maryland

Dec 21, 2009 21:15

In case you haven't heard, we had a bit of a snowstorm on Saturday.  We got about 20 inches or so (as seen on my deck).

Because we knew the storm was coming, on Friday night, we picked up the kids and got the Christmas tree and took them out to do some of their own shopping since we knew Sat. would be a bust.  Sunday wasn't really all that much better.  My body still hurts from all the shoveling.  I went out to the grocery on Sunday afternoon and made it all the way there and then got stuck on the street in front of the house.  Yay for neighbors who push your car!  There was no school today, and the government was closed.  The snowplows finally hit our street at about 10 AM today.  But it is still pretty much a mess on the small streets (including ours), although the major roads are pretty good.  But, this means that there is no school tomorrow, either.  And J and I definitely have work we need to be doing.  And, to be honest, I think the kids are getting a little anxious that they are not going to go back and see their friends and have their last-day-before-vacation activities on Weds.  I think we all have our fingers crossed.  I believe that the day care stuff will be open tomorrow, so at least J and I can get some work done.  Although, I'm not quite sure a full day will be had by all.

I did manage to get out today to go to the White House.  I had somehow gotten a ticket through a lottery at work to see the Christmas decorations and I decided that since I had never been, and the Metro was running again, and I wasn't even missing work, I needed to go.  Especially since my co-worker who was supposed to go with me got snowed in and couldn't make it.  I did run into a friend and her husband when I was there, so it was kind of nice and non-lonely after all. Here are a few pics:

This is the State Dining Room.  I have no idea how they have a state dinner in the White House.  These rooms are not that big.  But definitely pretty!

The White House in gingerbread covered in White Chocolate with an opening into one of the rooms and Bo, the First Dog, out in front.  This looks so much better than any gingerbread thing my kids bring home from school.

And then one last look from the G Street side -- we exited out the door between those big pillars.  Very pretty in the winter.  I'm glad I went.  Now, someday, I need to take the kids.

I still am not done shopping for J and I need one more thing for my dad (I did buy something small today while I was out, and then totally left it on the train coming home.  Urgh!), so I will hope that the streets are even better tomorrow night when I will have to go out and about to try to finish my shopping.  And of course, the mailman hasn't been since Friday, so all my x-mas cards are now late.  Why are holidays so stressful?

ETA:  Oh!! I almost forgot!!  Happy Birthday to afrocurl !  Roz, I hope you have a great birthday!  Mwah!

dc life, snow
