autophoenix Title: Why Peter Doesn't Make Assumptions
Summary: Claire comes over for dinner and Peter is rather unhappy about the company she brings over.
Word Count: about 590
Background: So, this is future-verse, about two-three years into it--Sylar and Peter are together, and they still live in NYC. I tried tying in BNW but I failsaured all over Word.
There were a lot of things Peter inherited from his late brother that he never thought would be part of his responsibilities. Though he never regretted filling that empty space in the lives of his family, it was incredibly life changing. Suddenly not only did he have to be an uncle, he was a dad, too, and not only to his own son. While he was still learning how to change a diaper, he was also relearning the wonders of pre-teen angst, and the complexity of being responsible for a young woman in college. All things considered, he handled it pretty well, but there were a few things he picked up from it that he had never had before- one of them being the suspicion of men who were near his niece. Especially friendly men.
When Claire told Peter she was bringing an old friend by for dinner one night, he didn’t give much thought into saying it was fine by him, and though Sylar probably wouldn’t have liked it, he was out of town, and as far as Peter was concerned, the more the merrier. What Claire failed to mention, however, was that she was bringing a male friend over. A cute male friend. One who was sitting a little too close to Claire for Peter’s peace of mind, so he just glared at the boy as they quite obviously flirted right in front of him. Oh they thought he didn’t notice, but he could see the way the boy’s hand lingered on her arm for longer than usual, how they giggled so secretively at things they said to each other. Thank God that stopped a little while back, now they were sitting quietly, and he’d be happy if the boy stayed that way for good.
“Peter, would you pass the rolls?” Claire asked, oblivious to her uncle’s glaring issue. He floated the roll basket over to where she was without really thinking about it. The boy looked a little bit creeped out by that, but what did he care? Let the sissy run home to his mommy about how people with abilities are scary, then Claire won’t ever be bothered by him again. The silence continued until the boy, who Peter never remembered the name of, leaned over to say something in Claire’s ear. That was the last straw for Peter, he had to say something.
“What are your intentions for my niece?” The two young adults across from him froze where they were and stared at him, like he was the one who was out of line here, not this puissant man-child who couldn’t keep his hands off.
Since the boy seemed to be frozen, Claire took up the slack. “What?” She sounded a little bit more horrified than she should have, all things considered.
Upon that invitation, Peter started onwards in addressing the boy. “Before you have any more to do with Claire, I want you to know that if you come within one inch of hurting her in any way I will electrocute you."
Again, Claire stared at him in horror. “Peter, stop it! Zach is gay.”
His annoyed and evil-ish look froze. “What?……..Oh.” This was one thing that Peter never even thought of, but suddenly it clicked that they weren’t flirting, they were just both acting like girls. “Uh, more rolls?” He probably owed an apology, but…nope, wasn’t going to give one.
There was an awkward silence as everyone processed what just happened. “This is why Sylar doesn’t let any of my friends come over here, isn’t it?”
"...It could be." That was the last thing anyone said for the rest of the night.
