Oh, I'm so glad I tweaked someone else's nostalgia-button! :)

and love the parallels you drawn between this and Supernatural, itself very much a western at heart.

It sort of is, isn't it? And I never even made that connection until I actually started typing this up. Making the comparison to SPN was an afterthought, really - as I started describing Heyes and Kid, I started seeing the parallels.

Historically, it was actually common practice for men (even strangers) to share lodgings, in boarding houses, even a bed, with no touch of innuendo.I remember reading an article about Abraham Lincoln and a close, male friend that he shared lodgings, and a bed, with, and how that wasn't unusual for the time. During my childhood in the 70's, I don't remember ever seeing that sort of thing portrayed on TV here in the states, other than as an obvious joke on a comedy show or something like that, though it may have been and I just don't remember. But I think the U.S. has been more uptight about that sort of thing for a long time now, so ( ... )

OMG. I've never considered that Smith and Jones were my first slash pairing, but I now believe it utterly! I loved them with a passion when I was at primary school. I vividly remember discussing the attractions of Pete Duel over the semolina and jam sauce at dinner time. I have to say as I was reading your LJ I was reminded of Morecambe and Wise, and then mini_mouse mentioned them! Haven't tried S&J on my kids yet, though - I'll have to try it!

Yay! Another AS&J fan! They were just so adorable and the actors' chemistry with each other just added to that perfectly.

I vividly remember discussing the attractions of Pete Duel over the semolina and jam sauce at dinner time.

This made me giggle and remember how my friend and I used to discuss them at length and choose which one was 'ours' on shows like this - I chose Heyes, she took Curry, she chose Starsky, I took Hutch, lol.

And now, after two mentions, I think I need to hunt down episodes of this Morecambe and Wise...sounds like something I'd like!

It makes me wonder if maybe there were complaints back in the day about this show depicting two handsome, single men who were devoted to each other, touched each other a lot, and routinely shared a bed, and voila...they became cousins!

This is very interesting thought!! :)

I like them as buddies and pals, not in love, so it works either way for me (cousins or friends). :D

I'm glad seeing it again didn't ruin it for you. I know how that can be with things you loved as a kid sometimes.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!! I just discovered this show last year and I like it lots. I haven't finished it yet, though, I'm saving the last couple of "real Heyes" episodes. ^^;;;

p.s. I like the way you made the pictures you posted look "soft." And oh yeah, those dimples!!!!! :)

It makes me so excited when I see people say this! I love the fact that a show this old still has the ability to attract new viewers. :)

If someone in Hollywood ever got the urge to do a remake of this show, I'd be torn - I don't think anyone could ever sell me on the characters the way Pete Duel and Ben Murphy did, but on the other hand, having a new version would inevitably get people interested in the old one. When they came out with the Starsky & Hutch movie, it had the effect of sending me running back to my old S&H show.

Honestly, if they were to just re-score AS&J with modern music this show would completely rock for 2011. :)

I know what you mean, I'd want to watch a remake but it probably wouldn't be very faithful, or capture the chemistry the two actors had. I think the guy who plays Neal on White Collar could play Hannibal Heyes, at least in the curly-hair, dimple department. But nobody is really Pete Duel....
