It was early one afternoon when Komui realised he had a terrible problem. He'd had a brilliant idea for manufacturing a far more efficient stain remover than the soap provided, but his last free piece of glassware was currently in use as a makeshift cafetiere.

Over the years in the Facility Komui had collected a respectable amount of scientific equipment, but it had suffered in the last month before he'd been sent home. He'd broken some when withdrawal had left him weak and shaky. He'd thrown more against the walls when he'd been barricaded in his room and forced to detox. On his return after his months away he'd broken the kettle that he'd used to vaporise his heroin so that he wouldn't be tempted to go down that route again. Now most of his remaining glassware was being used to store his reagents.

The solution seemed simple on the surface: transfer his chemicals into the water bottles, clean all the glass and use it for experimentation. However, he had no idea what would react with plastic and what wouldn't, which meant he'd have to put aside everything else and start testing, testing, testing for reactions.

The very idea made Komui glad he'd requisitioned coffee from the auction party. If he wanted to be sure he'd have to monitor the bottles for months, in case the reaction process was a slow one. It was the sort of thing that would leave him itchy with boredom and praying one of his subordinates would be thrown in so he could get on with some real work. He needed the chemical support to endure the disappointment of having to do the dull work himself.

Coffee had been Komui's most trusted companion since he began working as a scientist and it didn't fail him now. He was only three sips into his cup of the magical elixir when an alternative solution sprang to mind. He knew a man who'd proven himself to be skilled with a chemistry set. It was a man he'd been told was quite similar to himself. A man who was from the time when plastic bottles are the norm.

Komui set out from his room to go and rouse Sherlock Holmes, whistling merrily on his way.
