The water was rising rapidly, it didn't take a person of L's reasoning capacity to see that. With the main water breaks and the collapse of Al's transmutation it was going from bad to worse. However, L reasoned, if the water did not reach the ceiling in the rec room then the chances were better...
Near was still half-unconscious on one of the tables. The lights flickered and L studied him closely, before checking the gash on his head again. He had spoken to the boy about meeting but had never contemplated that it would be in such circumstances...
Together his heirs were a marvel, truly, as they were individually also, but sometimes L had trouble understanding them. And Mello had left in a such a rush....
