Without Mittens or Alphonse in his suite to cause the usual fiasco, Ed was beginning to despair at the supposed 'alchemy' of whichever world this book had come from. These people hadn't even been able to transmute metal to gold in over 400 years, and even if they had succeeded - using alchemy to transmute gold was taboo. Glaring at the dusty page with it's spidery script, Ed re-shuffled his sprawl over the sofa, tucking one arm behind his head and propping the book open again his knee. His quiet contemplation was destined to be disturbed very soon, though, for Celena was quickly heading in his direction, tearful at her latest confrontation with Howard Link.

She didn't bother to knock, bursting into the room and throwing herself at him, weeping furiously.

"Ed he doesn't w-w-w" She dissolved into incoherent sobs against his coat. Ed's eyes widened and he momentarily froze, half squashed beneath the tall woman, he managed to awkwardly pat her on the back through his confusion. Since when did Celena cry? She didn't cry, she threw tantrums!

"Who doesn't what...? Celena...?" He asked, wriggling a little to sit up and put his book to one side. Her hands balled tighter into his jacket, keeping herself firmly attached as she sobbed.

"H-H-Howard doesn't, he doesn't, my wish, he, he, he doesn't want me!" She dissolved into harder, hiccuping sobs, the wet patch on Ed's coat growing. "He doesn't want to be married!"

"You wished he'd marry you?!" Ed blurted out in shock, gold eyes wide in surprise as he tried to, gently, detach Celena from his jacket. "How the hell did that work?!"

Celena allowed herself to be detached, though not too far, presenting a swollen, wet face to Ed as she held up her left hand, showing the ring adorning her finger.

"I-I-we both have rings, we're-" she snuffled wetly "we're married, it's official, but now he's saying because he can't remember it doesn't count and what he means it'll never count because there's no priest of his religion here and he's scared we'll be split apart and-" she started to curl in on herself, her voice cracking. "He means he'll never marry me. Why aren't I good enough?"

"Uh... why do you want to marry him so badly? You're already dating or whatever." Ed tried, having really no idea what to say to her to make her feel better - romance wasn't exactly his forte. His blunt questioning wasn't doing anything more than make her curl up further.

"I just.. I'm sixteen, I'm old enough to marry, I should marry, and I love him, I really do. I'd give him everything, I'd make him mine forever, but he doesn't even want that." She was leaning her head in her hands now, wailing. "And he's an idiot! A stupid idiot! He's so traditional he won't even kiss past my neck! I want all of him and no one to say I'm not allowed!"

"Ok OK! Calm down, crap..." Ed swallowed hard, taking his hand off her back as if she was about to bite him. "Maybe there'll be a chance for you to marry him when we get carted off to some random place again...?"

Celena let out a pathetic little whine, leaning towards him again for comfort.

"He doesn't want that either. He's just, just playing with me. He's stupid, stupid, and he doesn't seem to realise even if we were both in the same world, there's no such thing as forever." She settled against the cringing Ed, wrapping a hand in his coat again.

"Is there something wrong with me? I am pretty, aren't I? If we were courting, you'd want to do more than just hold my hands, wouldn't you?"

Ed's face flushed a little bit as she tugged on his coat again. Yes, she was pretty, and yes, he would. But who the fuck said that out loud to said girl?

"Yea, yea you're pretty ok?" He mumbled, pushing some blonde hair from his face and suddenly finding a spot behind Celena's head very interesting. She settled further against him, wiping her face with her free hand.

"I shouldn't have fallen in love with him." She said quietly. This was nice, leaning against Ed, her handsome, if short and irritating friend. Far too short for her tastes. but still...

"You'd kiss me, wouldn't you?" She asked, looking up at him with red-rimmed eyes. Ed's eyes bugged for the third time in so many minutes before he gulped and frowned. This sounded like it was heading off in a really weird as hell direction.Well, yes he would, even if she was all red eyed like right now, but hell would freeze over before he'd let her know that - she'd rub it in for days. But saying no would probably make her cry again...

"What do you think?" He muttered eventually. She scowled up at him.

"Men are so stupid sometimes. That's not any sort of answer." She snapped back. She certainly wasn't like that when she was one, she was sure, but she was a minority.

"When I was a man, I'd take what I wanted, as soon as the opportunity presented itself." She declared, before craning her neck up and dragging him down by the collar for a very wet, clumsy kiss. He was warm and there and he wasn't Howard, which filled her with a vicious joy.

Apparently that hasn't changed! Ed nearly yelped. Not that it wasn't nice to kiss her.... but taking Ed by surprise usually wasn't a good idea unless it was in a fight. The short blonde flailed madly, seeing as he couldn't speak with Celena's lip against his own, nearly backing off the sofa.

"What the hell?!" He hissed, dragging the back of his hand across his mouth without thinking. Celena glared at him, offended and hurt.

"You implied you wanted it." She answered, her voice teary and tight. "Why wouldn't you? Are you saying there's something wrong with me too?"

"N- No!" Ed facepalmed and hard, rubbing the heel of his hand over his temple. "There isn't, I just don't want to get shot for that, ok?"

Celena blinked for a second, processing that one before scowling at him again, annoyed, but no longer offended.

"There's only one person who's allowed to say who I kiss and who has the right to make objections, and that's me. Really, are you that weak that you can't defend yourself?" To Celena, the sentiment smacked of cowardice. And any comment like that was going to go straight to the heart of Ed's pride.

Ed couldn't help a dramatic arm gesture. "I didn't say that dammit! I didn't mean that..."

"What did you mean?" She asked, drawing back and leaning her fists on her hips. "You're making absolutely no sense at all, Ed. Did you just prefer me when I was male?" She turned her head away, lifting her chin arrogantly. "Maybe you're too afraid to show you've got no skill in the area?"

Ed hissed angrily at both stabs, snatching Celena's wrist and dragging her back into a sloppy, haphazard kiss - attempting to prove her wrong on both counts.

"Happy now?" He snapped after pulling back, blushing madly. It was Celena's turn to wipe at her mouth.

"You're certainly no gentleman, are you?" She commented. "Was that your first kiss?"

"You point that out every chance you get." Muttered Ed, before his face flared as crimson as his coat. "N-no! No way!"

"Really?" She asked, giggling. "If it wasn't, I'm disappointed. I'd have thought a man who was meant to be a genius would have learnt how to kiss quicker than that. Maybe you're just slow in that area." Oh, this was fun, teasing him into brighter shades, pushing him off balance and pulling him back to her. It'd been far too long since she'd played this game.

Ed glared at Celena for what seemed like the hundreth time in five minutes, if Celena had still been a man they would have been fighting by now if Ed had any say in it.

"I thought you were used to that, dating Link and all." He hissed back. Celen'as eyes narrowed in response.

"He's a fast learner." She responded cooly. "He;s a very quick learner in the areas he's willing to venture."

He scowled, folding his arms. "I'll send him a dog treat for learning new tricks fast."

"With an attitude like that, I might reconsider offering you another kiss." She said, clucking her tongue.

"Who says I want you to offer?" Shot back Ed, scowling all the harder.

"Because you're a man." Celena replied, leaning over to take his hand. "I know the signs. I used to be one, after all." With a sneaking smile she tugged his hand and placed it on her chest, her eyes holding his in a silent challenge.

"Are you going to take what you want, or are you the hesitant type?"

Ed's brain freaked out. It flailed. It spazzed. It shouted and generally freaked. But somehow it didn't make it's way out of his brain, after five or so seconds it seemed past the point where outwardly freaking would work. Eventually her voice filtered in past the knowledge of where his hand was and... She'd ridicule him if he didn't. And if she was lying he could say he never wanted to kiss her again.

He moved forward slowly and pecked her on the lips. She responded very favourably, hooking her free hand round the back of his head and keeping him securely close while she deepened the kiss. Adoration, this was just what she needed to make herself feel better. Someone who wanted her and was willing to show it. She moved his hand against her chest, sighing into his mouth to hint at just what she wanted.

Ed didn't remove his hand, and willingly copied Celena's gestures when she deepened the kiss, stroking with his fingers and sneaking his other hand to rest on her waist - conscious of the cold metal. He would have worried about Link, but kissing a very pretty girl pushed away the anxiety.

It didn't matter he was short and argumentative and his metal arm looked ugly where it joined his body, he wanted her and wasn't hesitating. She let go of his hand on her chest, since he obviously had the hang of how that area should work, and pulled him close, their hips touching in a way Howard would never allow. Ed made an embarassing girly noise at the contact, pressing into her body without thinking and slipping his hand into the collar of her shirt, she was soft and her skin was warm. It was easy to forget her boyfriend's existence.

The squeak made her smile against his mouth and slip her hand lower from his waist, teasing as she gripped. His constant exercise regime had obvious paid off, and she sighed her appreciation as she squeezed.

His hand was very much appreciated on her skin, but the enthusiasm was tugging ther collar in the most uncomfortable way. She unfastened the top buttons of her blouse, stretching her neck into his touch. Ed tried not to show himself up by squeaking again but didn't quite manage, however distraction came in the form of bare skin. Moving his mouth to her neck, Ed nipped gently on the pale skin, slipping his fingers beneath her blouse and pulling her closer with the arm around her waist. She stretched her neck further, stroking his hair.

"Not that high, you'll leave marks above my clothes." She whispered, encouraging him with a pinch behind her back and a wriggle to free her undergarments, which was considerably helpful seeing as Ed didn't really have the second clue how to do that. But he took the hint, biting gently a little further down on her collar bone and sliding his hand underneath the clothing to properly touch her skin.

"Harder." She whispered, taking his hand through the cloth, sliding it back to her chest, under all of the wrappings. She sighed, tilting her head back at the warm press of his hand, the sharp wetness of his mouth.

"More, oh that's nice, but just a bit harder, Howard, love."

Ed stopped, and a mix of hurt and 'Idiot Elric' crossed his face before a frown settled then and he reach back to tug Celena's hand from his hair  - pulling his hands out of her clothes and wriggling back frm her.

"Yea, no." He muttered to a piece of wall behind Celena's head, pulling the tie out of his braid and re braiding it for an excuse to do something else and look purposeful. Celena stared at him for a moment, blinking and confused, the trails of his mouth cooling.

"What is it-" her eyes widened as it suddenly clicked what had slipped out before. "...Edward?"

The creeping, nasty little feeling in her belly, that she'd so successfully been ignoring suddenly coiled up and filled her with guilt. She looked down, her hands folding against her chest. Ed didn't move to meet her eyes either, staring steadfastly at the wall, letting the awkward silence fill the room. He didn't know what to say that wasn't sarcastic, or something to the effect of 'well you deserved that'.

"Yea..." He eventually mumbled, the epitome of eloquence. Celena winced slightly, turning herself away from his gaze as she rehooked her underwear.

"I suppose it's not as easy to give him up as all that." She murmured, tucking her blouse back in. She stilled, waiting for him to talk, the silence stretching out uneasily.

"I'm sorry." She finally said, still not quite looking at him. She knew, had he done her the same insult, she would have hurt him for it.

"Don't worry about it." Ed eventually managed, shrugging and aiming to look her in the eye but missing at the last minute - half way to a grin that didn't quite work. Celena hesitated for a moment before stepping up to him, giving him a brief hug.

"Ed, you know, if I wasn't with Howard, I think I might really have liked you instead." She offered up that, a small tidbit before letting go.

Ed laughed a little at that, half grimacing but it made it's way to more of a grin. He was still stung, but that little bit of 'trying to make you feel better' worked a little. "Yea ok, now go and make up before Link throws a drama fit too."

"I shan't tell him of this, so as long as you left no marks there shouldn't be any fits." She hesitated for a second, on the verge of speaking again, before thinking better of it and turning to leave. Ed swallowed a sharp remark in return.

It was time to swallow her pride and see what she could salvage between her and Howard Link. She might not be able to get everything she wanted, but she was still too attached to have nothing.
