Axel had been avoiding Roxas. He didn't plan it; in fact, the overpowering urge had been to go and see Roxas. But he'd held off. He didn't have the energy. He didn't know where he was. He was waiting to be rescued. He was waiting to be killed. He waiting for a lot of things while he avoided talking to Roxas.

But Roxas was coming to him now, and Axel huffed and stood to open the door. He was annoyed at this place, and if he wanted to more, he should had gone and found that Keyblade brat and...done what exactly? Apparently he and Roxas had already met. That worried Axel. They didn't know about each other's existence.

Well, unless this time traveling thing Roxas had tried to sell him on was real.

Didn't really matter. Roxas was here now. Traitorous, deserting Roxas.

Axel opened the door, surveyed him coolly, and leaned against the frame, saying nonchalantly, "Can I help with you something?"

Roxas fought the urge to sigh, meeting Axel's cool green gaze with a determined look of his own. "Let me in. We're gonna have a talk."

He wasn't sure where he was pulling this from, or what they were going to talk about or what he was going to say or anything. Ears twitched nervously on his head and it took all his willpower to keep the cream tail from lashing behind him.

This was a really stupid idea.

Axel shifted his gaze up and down Roxas's body, taking in the cat ears, and the tail behind him. He wanted to laugh, grab the ears, make fun of Roxas. It was actually nearly overpowering, the urge to laugh, but he kept his face neutral.

He'd had a lot of practice at that.

"Sure," he said, easily enough, moving aside so Roxas could come in the room. The tail twitched behind him. Oh hell, it was fucking hilarious. When Roxas came in Axel moved to shut the door, hiding a grin there so Roxas couldn't see. When he turned around, he was neutral again, and loped lazily to the chair, sprawling out, limbs going everywhere.

"So you wanted to talk?" he said shortly, rolling back and forth on the chair boredly.

It was really hard not to just hug him and never let go-- he was so pure Axel, so okay even after last week's catastrophe and watching Axel die in front of him-- Roxas thought maybe he understood why his best friend was acting like this.

But he still had no idea what to say, standing awkwardly in the doorway, tail twitching behind him and ears flattening themselves to spiky hair.

So, Roxas did something he was pretty sure he'd learned from Axel: improvised.

"I watched you die last week."

And then wanted to smack himself because he was still pissed Axel was acting like this and really, that was all he could say?

Axel merely looked down from the ceiling at Roxas for a glance as he seemed to retract what he'd just said. Not that Axel cared. He was doing great in his whole little non-caring world right now that didn't include Roxas anymore. Couldn't include Roxas anymore. But he was going to have to do something probably very bad soon, and he couldn't care then. Not that he could care. Feelings, and all that ( ... )

"Trying's better than nothing," Roxas mumbled quietly, ears pressing against his hair.

And oh did he know he was an idiot. Roxas was honestly most abusive toward himself with all the times he slammed his head into things. Like desks and tables and walls and his own hands.

He knew it wasn't fixed. He knew it was something that would probably take years, if they had them, to fix, something that would not just be talked out because with them nothing was ever that simple.

But Axel wasn't dead, and he was warm and Roxas thought that at least for a little while things would be okay.

"It's the test this week, I told you." He was not going to say the reason behind them. Ooh no.

"I don't get this place," Axel said immediately, still lazily tugging on Roxas's ears, trying to see how far he could go with them. "Why are we trapped here? I mean, I don't get it. I just remember you leaving... and then, well, I'm here. What's up with that? And you.. you're like ahead in time?"

He was trying really hard not to focus on how nice this was, with Roxas curled up against him and holding him, and tugging on his ears. He was really pulling on them to stop himself from petting them. Because that would be really, really weird.

"So this week's test was ears," he said, amused. "I probably would have looked great with them. But come on, it's me." He shot a quick down at Roxas. "I mean, you look okay. I guess."

"That hurts," Roxas muttered after a few minutes, glaring up at the man messing with his ears. Sometimes Axel's hands would slip, stroke the fur, and it felt really nice, but then he'd tug them too far and that was really painful. "They're connected to my nerves, you know."

Then he sighed again and thought out the answers to Axel's questions for several minutes before deigning to actually say it. "There's two tests this week. One is the ears and tail," which Roxas noticed was curling itself around Axel of its own accord. He scowled and put a stop to that with tinted cheeks. "And the other is some kind of time-swap. There's already weird time systems here-- people from the same place can be from different times-- and you've been here for a while. You just got... rewound, I guess."

It wasn't the most eloquent way of explaining it but Roxas had never claimed to be good with words. Besides, Axel's hands really were distracting.
