Hm. [Death is clearly taking stock of herself, flexing her (now normal length) fingers and touching her cheeks, making sure there isn't any trace of the devastation that was left on her body last week]
Seems like I'm back. [She smiles] Peachy keen. [And then a look of slight confusion. Why had she said that?]
I have to apologize for anyone I might

Which... might be where the 40s slang came from.

[She pulls a pair of sunglasses out of nowhere and puts them on dramatically]
Don't worry about it, hon, you were a sweetheart.

Bucky Barnes. I'm not sure we were properly introduced.

[She chuckles] What, I shouldn't keep in mind that keen is better than swell, and a loony's someone that acts real weird?
Probably not. I'm Death.

That gets a little laugh out of him, though.] Well, it's true. But the terms are a little outdated. I'm a little outdated.
A pleasure. We might have met before. [Har har, Bucky, you and your 'I died once' jokes.]
Reply
[She laughs] No such thing as outdated. It's an illusion invented by people preoccupied with now. There are things that never go out of style.
No. [She winks] I remember faces very well.

Well, I guess that's a matter of perception. I still get teased when I talk like I used to.
[A quirk of the eyebrow.] Well, you said you're Death. I have died once before. Not here though, I suppose that explains it.

I have a very broad view of things, Bucky. Humanity's not old enough for anything to be outdated yet, except possibly not wearing any clothes or living in huts.
I am, hon, but I don't recognize people from places other than my world. I do know a few of your hero friends, but for some reason a few of them I don't recognize....

You don't? Huh. I think I might know which universe you're talking about... [Hero friends. Yeah, he knows which one. There are really only two, the Justice League Earth and the Avengers Earth.] That's fascinating, actually. I wonder who your counterpart on my Earth would be...

Oh, I know. In my world, I've seen them all, from the very first one, the outcast man from Krypton.
Such an old, beautiful world... I was there, at the end. I never thought the survivors would amount to so much, but there they are.
[She shrugs] Another version of myself, if what holds true from my universe is the same in yours. The Endless are so for a reason, but we can die like any other. One takes our place, afterwards, takes up the mantle of their duty, or one of us changes to suit it. Or maybe it's something completely different. I don't know.

Sounds complicated. [Meaning, he doesn't quite get it and is chalking it up to mystical mumbo jumbo.] Then again, the mystical isn't really my department.
A pleasure to meet you under circumstances other than dying, though.

Magical? Kal-el is simply from another world, and on earth, he was surprised to find himself a great hero. Others followed suit.
[She smiles] Well, there's plenty of opportunity for that, here. I seem to have an abundance of time.

[Bucky shakes his head slightly.] Oh, no, I get the alien lifeforms thing. Aliens aren't exactly unusual on my version of Earth. It's the things about... the Endless, did you say? That sounds complicated to a fella like me.
Don't we all. It's a game of hurry up and wait around here. Hurry to get through experiments, wait for the next one to hit.

The Endless. We're... we just are. Concepts. Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair and Delirium, things that are and always will be, until the universe is ended.
I'm sorry, it's a little difficult to explain.
[She leans back] I don't have much of a problem with that. Patience is a virtue, don't you think?
Reply
[A quiet chuckle.] I've never been a very patient man.
