i definitely agree that we could use more positive images of black women on tv and in the media.
however.
shouldn't the more relevant and more pressing goal be that black women be treated with respect and as equal citizens under the law, regardless of how we are being portrayed in the media?
and then, given the context that an election is right around the corner, it's really hard for me to care too much about what people are saying about michelle obama. yes she's being characterized as an angry black women. because there isn't shit else you can say. she's intelligent, capable, accomplished and articulate and yet you can't throw the elitist title onto her because it doesn't fit. so far, there have been no scandals to uncover. her support of her husband seems like one of the most genuine things i've ever seen on tv. and you know what? i bet she is at least a little bit "angry".
and clearly i'm not an expert so i could definitely be wrong...but anybody who wouldn't vote for barack because of the now misconstrued comment michelle made about finally being proud to be an american...probably wasn't too serious about voting for him anyway, if that comment, said by his WIFE holds as much weight as all of McCain's many flaws.
and while on the subject of the election...the whole "they're just voting for him because he's black" comments said with disdain...REALLY fucking annoy me. first of all, barack's blackness is nuanced, to say the least. secondarily...unlike other 'former' colonies...black americans are not just the political minority...we are the numerical minority. so yes, the possibility of having a black president does some shit to psyche and it excites me, and if you can't feel that, i don't really give a fuck. especially if you've never experienced that reality.
