I wanted to write up something quick for the Hobbit (which is being released this next month), and I've decided I shall run through some of my favorite characters from Lord of the Rings. My very first favorite was Legolas (this was pre-films, and mostly related to my love of elves), and I still have a huge soft spot for him, but one day I realized

Re: Faramir, I really like that theory! Not only was Faramir a reminder of what he'd lost (and Finduilas basically died because she wasn't like Denethor and wasted away in the city), it was also a reminder of the person he had almost been. I had actually written a fic a long time ago (based on a fanvid someone did for Faramir on the song "Numb" by Linkin Park) where there's a little boy whose father is harsh and disappointed in him all the time, and at the end of the story it's revealed that Faramir had that story told to him by his mother, and that the little boy was Denethor.
Re: elves, I believe there is no mention that Arwen is their granddaughter, and there is definitely no mention of her mother. I was sad, because now everyone thinks of Legolas when they think of elves (which isn't all bad, I love him) and doesn't realize there are other elves with far more interesting and detailed stories. Like, I swear 20% of all LOTR fanfic ever is Legolas/OC MarySue trash. And then no one writes about Celeborn, or Thranduil.

Thranduil, yes! What with the battle of Dol Guldur and the driving out of the Necromancer etc etc etc. Very interesting individual.

I think Thranduil will get some more development in the Hobbit, but I really love his character. He's ultimately Sindarin, but he rules over a mix of Sindarin and Sylvan elves, and I think maybe living among them has made him more like a Sylvan elf. The way he treats Bilbo and the dwarves in the Hobbit is very unexpected for an Elf-lord, looking back after meeting all the others in LOTR. Also, since he's smack in the middle of Mirkwood, he ends up being forced to actively fight back the darkness, whereas the others sort of hole up in their hidden/protected/distant lands. And I rather like the idea that Thranduil and Celeborn know each other and are sort of friends.
