"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."
Greatest opening line EVER, I've decided.
Yes, I finally picked up The Gunslinger.
So it was written. So it was.
It's been my goal to start The Dark Tower series for many years now. I've had several people (whom I trust about books)recommend it, but it seems the world didn't want me to read it. Odd things kept happening every time I worked up the nerve ("THE NERVE!") to pick it up. Other books came and went, and this book kept phasing out of space and time. It flitted in and out of my existence like a tricksy little devil! But I finally caught up to it, and held tight. Man! I had to soldier through this thing! Not because it was a difficult read or anything, but damn it, Stephen King! The whole book felt (to me) like I was jumping into movie that was halfway done. I only had snatches of information, and it drove me absolutely batty.
And then I read The Drawing of the Three
***delighted sigh***
Greatness. It kind of put The Gunslinger into perspective for me. It grounded everything, and gave me some grasp on their reality...which in turn, endeared the first book to me...even though it was a task at the time.
I just started Wastelands. I'm really enjoying this journey to the Dark Tower with Stephen King. I hope I find what I'm looking for too.
On a side note- The song that's playing now sums up all my thoughts on Roland, the gunslinger.
Besides being a perfect fit to my emotions of the character....it's a great fucking song. Great album actually. Soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ by Peter Gabriel. It's pure music, no lyrics and such. It's also a kind of study of cultural instruments by Gabriel. It's fantastic and beautiful and I HIGHLY recommend it.
