blockbap gang au based on some giant clusterfuck of "one shot" and "nalina" and every other kpop mv involving street gangs (bangtan, d-unit, and lc9 definitely exist in this universe).
this probably won't be a continuing thing so if anyone wants to pick this up and write it, be my guest. i just really like world building. :'v also, zico quoting bang's lines.
Yongguk checks his phone -- 7:30 exactly, the same time that was scrawled in messy red graff on the wall across from their garage. He's still not sure why Zico couldn't have just sent a text or something. Then again, the guy's always had a flare for the dramatic.
"What it do, hyung?"
Speak of the devil. Yongguk pockets his phone as Zico approaches, looking decidedly more normal than the older man was expecting. The last time they saw each other, the Red Tiger leader was sporting some pretty godawful brown dreads and a bright yellow jacket with his insignia blazing across the back. Today, he's oddly low key, with short blonde hair and plain black leather.
What's even more surprising, however, is the person trailing along behind him. Yongguk raises an eyebrow at Yukwon, but the redhead bruiser merely scratches his tattooed cheek and regards Yongguk with disinterest.
"I didn't know the Dragons and the Tigers were on hanging terms."
Zico grins, and Yongguk thinks he catches a flash of sharpened canines. "Yeah, well, we managed to temporarily put aside our differences for the greater good."
"Surprised Jaehyo didn't try to set you on fire you for suggestin' it." Besides his longstanding rivalry with the Tigers, the Black Dragon leader is notorious for his pretty face and incendiary temper. In a way, he reminds Yongguk of Daehyun; maybe there's something about the water in Busan.
Zico laughs -- yeah, he's definitely filed his teeth. "He did, at first, but desperate times call for desperate measures." He glances over his shoulder at Yukwon, who scowls, but says nothing. Yongguk watches the exchange, a sour premonition forming in the pit of his stomach.
"Must be pretty bad to get you two to team up," he says, tone carefully nonchalant.
Another laugh, shorter and far less amused. "You literally have no idea. You Matos always managed to remain neutral, and I can respect that." The blonde sidles up to him. He drapes an arm around Yongguk's shoulder, voice low in his ear. "Thing is though, you're so busy keepin' to yourselves that ya'll don't know shit about what's going on around you."
Yongguk frowns and resists the urge to shove the younger man. Zico has a fast mouth and no concept of personal space, but the last thing Yongguk is interested in is starting a fight, especially if Yukwon really is here as some kind of backup. He respects Zico, trusts him about as much as he can trust anyone outside his own gang, which, granted, isn't a lot, but the two of them have always been on decent if not exactly friendly terms. Still, he probably should have brought along Daehyun, or better yet, Jongup.
"What do you want, Zico?"
The grin vanishes. "You hear about what happened to the Angels?"
"C.A.P's gang? No."
"Pfft, course not. How about Zea? The Bloods? C. United?"
Yongguk sighs, irritated, not just with Zico but himself as well. He didn't come here to play twenty questions, but the fact is he probably wouldn't have to if Zico's accusation wasn't at least partially true -- the Matos have avoided a lot of bloodshed and vendettas, largely by minding their own business and keeping out of what Yongguk always considered to be petty gang politics. The trade off was they were almost always the last to know whenever something big went down. Usually, it didn't matter, since most of the time it was nothing that affected them.
Yongguk has a bad feeling this isn't one of those times.
"I ain't got all day, man. Just tell me."
Zico's throws up his hands. "They're gone."
"...Gone," Yongguk echoes.
"As in, every member dead or locked up, all within the last two weeks. Hell, they even got all of Exo and the Juniors, and there's like fuckin' fifty of those guys." Zico's mouth quirks sardonically, like it's some kind of big joke, and for a second Yongguk seriously does feel like he's missing the punchline, until he notices the other man is speaking through his teeth.
Yongguk is silent. When Zico demanded they meet, this was not what the older man expected at all. To be fair, he's never quite sure what to expect with Zico, but this is almost too much for him to wrap his head around. Yukwon's presence alone bothers him more than he's willing to admit -- the redhead is Jaehyo's left hand, his muscle; part of his inner circle. If he's following Zico, then Zico must currently be at the top of both gangs. That Jaehyo, with all his vanity and ego, would be so backed into a corner that he'd allow anyone, much less his biggest rival, to stand above him speaks volumes as to how fucked up the situation truly is.
And then there's Zico himself. It occurs to Yongguk at that moment that maybe, maybe Zico's method of contact was less out of theatrics and more out of actual necessity. That wall gets tagged over regularly by the local street kids, positioned directly within the Matos' normal line of site -- a perfect billboard for a passerby to leave a fast message that would be guaranteed to vanish by the end of the day, untraceable, unlike a phone call or a text. It makes Yongguk uncomfortable to be reminded that, for all his eccentricities, Zico is both intelligent and level-headed, and that makes him dangerous. Right now, Zico is a long ways off from freaking out, but he's clearly agitated, a little too careful, and that alone is disturbing.
Yongguk pinches the bridge of his nose -- he suddenly regrets throwing out his last pack of cigarettes a few days ago, even if Himchan was on his case non-stop about quitting again.
"How?" he asks at last, settling on the obvious because he really doesn't know what else to say.
"Government's passed some kinda new law extending the jurisdiction of the street forces." Zico starts to pace. "I don't know all the details, but the core of it is that anyone known or suspected of activity operating outside the contract is now subject to immediate arrest, judgement, and punishment without trial. Basically, it's open season on the gangs." He fixes Yongguk with a pointed look. "This is no joke, man, this is some serious Gestapo shit. Cops ain't playin' around no more. They're coming hard and there ain't that many of us left. You've got some young ones runnin' with you too, don't you? That giant baby bunny, Zelo or whatever. What are you gonna do if they get him?"
"Watch your mouth, Zico," Yongguk growls. His boys are his weakness and it's one thing to consider the hypotheticals himself, but for Zico to voice it out loud is toeing a line.
The younger leader only sneers. "Watch your back before you worry about my mouth," he shoots back. "There's a war coming, Bang Yongguk, and it's coming whether you're ready or not. Frankly, I don't give a shit if you join us or go fuck yourself. The only reason I'm warnin' you at all is 'cause you helped Taewoon once, and I don't like owing people."
He turns abruptly to Yukwon, signaling with two fingers. Yukwon pushes up from the wall he was leaning on and starts to walk, still silent yet seemingly grateful the meeting is over. Zico follows him, but not before throwing a last warning glance over his shoulder to Yongguk.
"Think about it, Bang," he says. "'Cause the way things stand, you and yours are gonna be all alone. When the time comes -- and believe me, it will -- don't you dare look to us for help."
Yongguk doesn't need to be told -- he is thinking about it. He thinks about C.A.P and Doojoon and everyone Zico didn't name as well, all the other gangs he knows by name but never concerned himself with in the past, suddenly wondering if they're dead or alive or in prison. A lot of them are his age. A lot of them are just kids. He thinks about Zelo.
"...So I take it you'll be in charge, huh?"
Zico pauses, and Yongguk can feel the victorious grin even before he turns back to face him.
"I think we can work somethin' out," Zico all but purrs. "You just gotta rock with me, y'nah mean?"
