“No, dunt go there!” Henry chuckled softly at the exclamation of his son as he played with him. He knew very well that the shape did not go in that slot but it was amusing to listen to John shouting and then ‘showing’ him where it went properly.
“The square goes in this one?” he asked, putting it in the circle slot.
“No! Daddy!” John said, almost exasperated. “Tell him, mummy!”
Both John and Henry looked up towards Rose and Henry grinned;
“Stop teasing the poor boy” she laughed, shaking her head, pressing a kiss to both of their heads.
They were both pulled from their sleep by the loud patter of tiny feet, of the covers being yanked off their bed and of a small boy, his short hair ruffled from sleep but with his eyes wide and a smile on his face;
“He’s been! He’s been!” he cried, almost jumping up and down on the spot.
Henry yawned and rubbed his eyes, smiling downwards blearily.
“Get up Daddy!” John cried, prodding him with his finger and slapping him with his hand.
“Okay, okay, I’m up” he murmured, turning around to face Rose, kissing her deeply.
“Merry Christmas, love”
“You’ve not missed much…your mother and father have been in, David, Jake and Mickey…it’s been like a party in here some days. I don’t think the nurses like it, they barely like me staying, but they’re nice and they tolerate it. Everyone from work sends their best wishes, there is a pile of get well soon cards on the desk that’s almost toppling over, I should bring them in…I miss you so much, Rose”
He wiped at the tears that had fallen, gripped her hand, rested his head on the pristine white hospital sheets and waited for her to wake.
Carefully he placed his hand on her hip, hand in hand, his eyes never leaving hers as they found a rhythm with the music. His breathing was slightly elevated, his face a complete mask of concentration, a small, almost self-satisfied smile pulled at his lips.
His smile grew wider as she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, lips almost touching. He moved his arms around her waist, his whole body relaxing a little the more time drew on.
The music ended, he pressed his lips to hers;
“I’m not too bad” he laughed.
Rose nodded and grinned.
