As you know, I am currently doing an online course which is supposedly set at level 6 - final year degree level. The material is fascinating and I am really enjoying both the content and the analysis/synthesis involved. However, the discussion boards are a dead loss, as on all but one of the units so far the tutor and I are the only people who have posted.
I suspect several of the students who signed up are way out of their depth - at least two seem to have read no fantasy beyond Harry Potter and seen LotR. A couple are students at the university of origin of the course and may be trying to get ahead on credits for their final year without the full range of academic skills to do this. But if it's frustrating for me, think of the poor tutor, who has no hope of fostering a sense of community when it is in essence a one-to-one dialogue between her and me.
I know I am doing all the reading and the posts are all by me alone. I don't quite know how she can know that, though. Fortunately, although I am doing this "for credit" in terms of doing all the work, I have no actual need of credit at that level. I imagine that makes it even more frustrating for the tutor, though!
