For a murderer, he ran a great kitchen.

Every Tuesday, we order food for between 4 and 10 people. There have been rare exceptions, when we've eaten chili or pizza or something, but pretty much for years, game night is when we order out.

With increasing regularity, I'd say from 75% to 95% in the past months, we order Chinese food from Fresh Wok. Fresh Wok isn't the closest Chinese delivery (Star Moon is, but their food is soggy and soaked in salt water, feh) but they deliver to us in sometimes astonishingly small amounts of time.

I started timing them, from the minute I put my phone down to the minute they knock on the door. Best time yet recorded: $100 worth of food at our door in 14 minutes. I know they've been faster; they've been so fast that no-one can believe it is them at the door. Even thinking about the base time it would take them to put the food in containers and then in bags and then in a car for the 9 avenues they have to traverse to deliver the food... even then, 14 minutes is pretty staggering.

We've joked in the past that we are single-handedly putting one of the kids that occasionally answers the phone through college. I'd say 45 weeks out of the year we send $30-$80 and we've been buying from there since back on Pillsbury, when the driver came back to argue with Dieter because Dieter may have tipped him too much.  A couple of thousand a year, at least.

Last Tuesday, when we ordered, we had no idea the turmoil going on over at Fresh Wok. Federal Marshals had shown up to arrest the manager on murder charges. Don't worry, we still got our food and if it wasn't as snappy as normal, you can forgive the people left to work the kitchen who hadn't murdered anyone. From what I understand from the Star Trib's story there is a kind of invisible network of Chinese restaurant workers, ready to adapt to every staffing need in a Chinese restaurant across the country, so I'm sure they'll have a new manager by now.

Anyway, I'm curious to find out if anything changes when we order tonight. Was he the man holding the place together? Was he the man that used to take our orders? Will the delivery drivers start slacking off now that they don't have a homicidal overseer? What is the new manager running from? Or will it be exactly the same because it is delivery Chinese and it is always pretty great? We'll see.
