A/N: The scene takes place in the episode of Moonlight called ‘Dr. feel-good’. Chloe is working in L.A. She doesn’t know of the existence of vampires yet…

The air was full with the scent of blood. Something violent was on the loose, and it was wrecking havoc. He knew from Mick that a newly turned vampire was out there killing humans in vain to stop his insatiable thirst.

It was then that he heard running feet, belonging to a human female. Additionally the scent of a newly turned vampire hung in the air. A blood scent followed.

With irritation he followed the scent as fast as he could. He didn’t want to rescue who ever it was that the turned vampire was after… but then again the human scent held something familiar, and a feeling of urgency washed over him.

His instincts told him to move fast. Get there on time. He didn’t know why, he only knew that he had to hurry up. He sped up with only one thought ‘get there on time’.

She was running, as fast as her legs could. She didn’t dare to look behind, because that would for one slow her down as well as give her the chance to glance at the ‘thing’ that was chasing her. Besides everyone knew that it was a given to get attacked and die in a movie when a person turned around instead of running like a madman to safety. So she wasn’t going to do that.

She realised while running that there wouldn’t be a Clark there to save her. Not even Mick could help her now. She was a prey, which was hunted down by whatever it was that was after her. She just hoped that the blood on the guys face and chest wouldn’t get an addition of hers too. She just had to get out of the alley and to some lively street.

Only a few more steps, she thought to herself. But before she could reach her saving destiny something grabbed her roughly from behind and slammed her against the wall of a building. She let out a gasp and when she connected with the wall a whimper. She would so have a bruise there, she thought.

It was then that she could see her attacker better. His long canine teeth were the first thing she noticed. Only then did she take in his ‘other’ appearance. His shirt was soaked with blood, and blood was smeared around his mouth and running down his chin. His face was unnaturally pale and his eyes were almost ice-blue with the pit-less black iris.

She started screaming and held her arms before her face, trying to shield herself from her attacker. Her attacker took hold of her arms and slammed her again against the wall to silence her. The shock of what was happening to her caught up and her screams died as she looked up with horror filled wide eyes, realising that the man before her was the serial killer that was on the run from the police.

He started to grin at her and said with malice in his voice “Don’t worry, I’m a doctor!”

He descended down onto her, and for her it felt like he was doing it in slow motion. She remembered vaguely that the police had told her that all the victims from the serial killer had all been left without a drop of blood inside of them.

She shuddered with realization. This was a vampire. And this vampire was going to suck her to death. She would have laughed about the mere thought of this sentence if she hadn’t been in this situation now. Unbelievable as Smallville, absurdly impossible was L.A.

Just as he was about to bite into her neck, she felt him being jerked away from her. She saw her attacker fight with someone in what must have been one expensive suit. The fighting looked almost unnatural fast and strong. There were sounds that almost sounded like animals roaring at each other.

In a move to fast for her to fully follow her attacker had been slammed against the opposite wall. And she hoped with every fibre of hate and retaliation inside her that the bastard broke a bone or two while slamming into the wall. But her happiness was only short lived, because her attacker got up again and started charging onto her rescuer.

Not wanting to see what was going to be surely her rescuers death, and then hers, she turned her head away. She hoped that she could make herself small enough to disappear into the wall, but knew that no such thing was going to happen. She heard another inhuman roar and sounds of ripping and tearing flesh.

The noise stopped, but she had no strength or courage left in her to look and see what was happening. When nothing threatening could be heard curiosity got stronger and she turned and spotted only her rescuer. Her attacker had disappeared into thin air.

“Chloe?” the man that saved her asked with confusion in his voice. It was then that she noticed that his face was extremely pale. The areas around his eyes were almost bordering to red and his eyes… if she had to describe them she’d say the colour wasn’t right.

Taking a shaky breath and calming herself she tried to stand up. With no success. Because her knees buckled and she fell right after getting up. Her rescuers hand came and steadied her by holding her by the elbow.

It was only after she stood on her own legs, while leaning against her saviour that she noticed something off. He didn’t have a heartbeat. She couldn’t hear it, nor feel his heartbeat through his clothes. But at the same time, he smelled familiar. It was probably his scent and the feeling of after-shock that she didn’t freak as much as she would normally have.

Turning her head she regarded him for some time. He stood next to her, still steadying her by holding her elbow. He was looking down on her with concern, and it was only then that she recognized who had been her saviour.

“Josef?” she asked startled.

Any reservation she had had before crumbled at that moment, and she embraced her saviour. The dam finally broke and all her emotions as well as the slow decrease of adrenalin got to her. She started to sob, clutched at Josef’s back while her body shook with the aftermath of her fear.

He was hesitant at first. She was a friend of Mick after all. Everything he knew of her was not a lot and indirectly only through him. Sure he had seen her and greeted her from time to time, but that was it really.

They were nothing more than acquaintance before this encounter. Slowly, as to not startle her he lifted his hand and placed it on the small of her back holding her reassuringly, while using the other one to run over her head and hair, to reassure himself that she hadn’t been hurt by the wild and newly turned vampire.

He held her and started rocking her, to clam her down. He noticed how small and fragile she was, even if she had been a vampire he thought. His chin rested on the top of her head, and he took a moment only to feel how it was to hold her, and to memorize how she smelled.

“It’s alright. Chloe, don’t worry. He won’t hurt you. It’s alright.” He repeated this like a mantra, while stroking her hair and she did calm down. Her sobbing had died down and instead she buried her face into his chest.

It was then that he understood the urgency that had first consumed him. His instincts had recognised that Chloe had been the one to be chased by the rouge vampire.

He told himself that the reason for his protectiveness of her was because she was a close new friend of Mick. He breathed her scent in again, trying to tell himself that there was no other reason, none at all.
