She stared into the distance, outside the dinner-windows. A notepad and pen in her hands, the silly alien antennas on her head, ignoring the mumbled something’s the person before her was uttering, because he still hadn't decided what he would want to get.

She huffed irritated, turned, took the apron off, and then walked to the back office. Sure enough her boss, and at the same time father of her best friend was sitting behind his desk, doing calculations.

“Excuse me, Mr. Parker?” Maria asked hesitantly after having knocked.

Mr. Parker looked up from his papers, and stared at her, noticing right away that she had the apron and antennas in her hands, instead of on.

“Yes, Maria?” asked he, because she was after all his daughters best friend, so he couldn't call her by her last name.

“I just wanted to tell you that I am quitting!” said Maria, and walked forward. She placed the things on his desk, and was about to walk away when his voice stopped her.

“What is the meaning of this?” asked he, surprised and confused, not understanding her motives, if there were any.

“I think there is something more out there for me... I want to take things into my own hands... I'm sorry Mr. Parker... I just can't stay here...” said Maria with a sad face, remembering the shooting, and the subsequent loss of her best friend.

He only nodded and turned back to his papers, trying to block out the feelings of pain.

“Good luck Maria!” was all he said, dismissing her. He wasn't angry with her; in a way he felt fatherly pride for the young girl who had always been most dear to his deceased daughter.

In a way, he told himself, it was like Liz was telling him that she too was going to move on with her life... and at the memory of his daughter, he stood up, went to his private bathroom and splashed water onto his face, trying to hold back his tears.

Outside the Cash Down, Maria found a pay phone booth, and dialled the familiar number she had always dialled at least once in a week, for so many years now. She waited three rings, then heard the familiar voice say 'huh' and smiled softly.

“It's me...” she said slowly.

“Is everything alright?” he asked worried. Ever since the shooting that happened at her work place, which ripped her best friend from her, he would tell her to quit the place, that he would be more than happy to have her somewhere that he knew that she would be safe.

“Yes... or at least it's going to be...” she exhaled slowly, but her voice was still shacking. “Dean, could you come and pick me up? I want to go... I don't want to stay here anymore...”

He was quiet for a moment, and she started to doubt that he ever meant it seriously when he told her that he wanted her with him, until he next said.

“Sam and I are only finishing a job... We'll be there for you tomorrow evening... I promise to be there... Just don't change your mind until then, you hear me?”

She laughed out loud; no, she wouldn't change her mind she said. She wanted out of this place. Out of the monotonous life she had tried for so many years to hold on to. She couldn't do it any more... She was tiered of Roswell, and all she wanted was to be together with Dean, even if it meant sleeping in crappy motels, and sitting for hours in his car, while he drove and Sam looked up the potential places to go to next.

She couldn't stay here anymore...

THE END.
