A/N: This fic was made after watching a trailer for a fan vid called ‘Fallen Angels’. The description of the vid, the story got me hooked right away. And it had my favourite 2 characters in it, Castiel and Chloe. So, after asking the vid maker if I was allowed to write a fanfic for the vid, and getting the ‘go ahead’ I started out writing down anything I could think of. Because a more complete fic would take me forever, and I was a little afraid that I’d loose interest on the way... I decided that I’ll just write a prologue to the vid. Explaining the origins and that would go nicely with the vid trailer.

Start of the Prologue: How it began

She was walking down the street at night again. Like she always did. It was dark, cold and some streetlights weren’t working. So she’d sometimes disappear in the shadows, only to appear again under a working light.

Tap tap tap

She didn’t fear the night. Never did. So when the only work she could find at the moment was one in a dinner, getting the late shifts, she hadn’t hesitated and grabbed the chance for that job. After all, she had a half-sister who needed support, and now that they’re father wasn’t with them anymore; she had to take on the responsibility as the family-eldest.

Tap tap tap

Another light that wasn’t working. Another street she needed to cross. Just a few more steps, and then she’d be home.

“We need milk, butter and … oh yeah, the cheese is all out too!” said Mary in a bored tone. She banged the door of the fridge close, after having searched through their fridge without finding what she needed.

Releasing a sigh, Chloe went to the kitchen area. Sometimes it was a plus that the only apartment they could afford was one that only had two small bed rooms and a kitchen slash living area. At least they had a toilet and shower too.

“I told you to go and buy things. What exactly did you do with the money I gave you for that?” asked the older sister her younger sibling.

“There’s this new movie… and the girls really wanted to watch it… Chlo, I couldn’t not go!” she answered with pleading eyes. “I’d be the laughing stock of them all…” she whimpered.

“Mary, if you become the laughing stock of your friends just because you can’t afford to go and watch some stupid movie… then I guess you don’t have that great friends to begin with! Why don’t you look for someone who is a little more opened minded?” she answered.

Chloe watched her sisters face fall. It was probably all the worse for her sister; loosing their father; having to move to a cheaper apartment, a cheaper neighbourhood; not being able to continue the life they had had before. And to make it worse, the new school Chloe had to register her sister into was being tough on her little sis.

“So, what was the movie about? Was it any good?” she asked to divert the attention of her little sister from darker thoughts.

Mary’s eyes lit up again, having forgotten her momentary sadness, and she jumped excited up and down. “It was really great!!! Chloe, you should have seen it. It was about angels, and witches and demons! And there was this great good looking actor acting as an angel turned evil! And he was trying to get the demons and witches to destroy all angels… and and… it was great!” she finished with a happy smile.

“Ah… I see” chuckled Chloe, amused with her sister’s excitement. Her little sister had a fascination with all things supernatural. She swallowed books about vampires, witches, angels and demons in a matter of minutes. Was always up for discussing things like the question if a demon wasn’t actually a fallen angel, and if in that case they could atone for themselves.

A knock on the door startled them both. Chloe went and opened the door, peering through it. “Yes?”

“Hi…” it was one of their neighbours, an elder woman. “I was wondering if I could borrow a cup of sugar… I seem to have forgotten to buy some…” She sounded distressed to Chloe, so she smiled and nodded to her.

“Yeah sure, just wait a second.”

Chloe opened and closed some cupboards, looking for their sugar tin.

“No, Chlo! That old hag always comes to borrow something… She never returns the favour!” whispered Mary, halting her older sister with her hand on her shoulder.

“Hush, Mary!” said Chloe, frowning at her sister and shacking her hand off of her. “I know myself that it’s rather convenient for her to always ask for something from us, but maybe someday we’ll need help from her... besides, she’s an old woman, who can barely fend for herself. … Do good and good will be done to you!” Looking around again, she shook her head. “Where the hell did I put the sugar…?”

Rolling her eyes irritated, Mary produced the sugar, which she had been hiding behind her back. “Here! But I bet you, we’ll never get anything in return from her!” huffed Mary, stamping back to her small room.

It was morning again. This routine would never change, thought Chloe as she once again dragged herself out of the bed, and into the small bathroom she shared with her sister. She splashed water on her face and rubbed it, slapping her cheeks lightly.

After finishing and stepping out again, she knocked on her sister’s door and opened it carefully. “Marry, wake up. Time to go to school!” Then she left the door to her sister’s room opened and went to the kitchen area.

She went about the daily routine to make breakfast for one, but coffee for two. While doing so, Mary had come out of her room, fully clothed and looking ready to go to school. She mumbled something incoherent as she reached for the breakfast and devoured it without a second thought. The coffee Chloe made was transferred to Mary’s ‘to-go’ cup and with a quick kiss to her older sister’s cheek, Mary went out the door and off to school.

Chloe called after her little sister just before she was out the door, the words she always said. “Study, make me proud, have a nice day!” She waited five minutes to make sure her sister wouldn’t come back and then poured her still hot coffee down the sink.

Placing the dirty cup on the counter, she closed any kitchen equipment that was still on, and then proceeded to go back to bed. She needed another two or three hours of sleep before going back to work.

Life was hard on the Sullivan girls, but Chloe had long ago decided that she would shelter her little sister from the coldness of the real world. It was what their father would have also wanted, mused she as her head hit the pillows.

At around noon-time is the second time she wakes up.

It’s part of the routine. She wakes up twice a day; once for her sister in the morning and the second time for herself at noon.

She dresses in that uniform she never liked; a faded yellow dress, her nametag on her left breast-pocket. That’s what her job looks like. She needs to go to work, so she hurries outside.

Outside the routine continues. She sees her neighbour. Gabriel.

He’s nice, when they talk he always asks about her and her sister. She doesn’t know for sure what exactly it is that he does. She only knows that some people call him Sylar when they talk. Once she even walked into a heated conversation, one night, but it stopped as soon as they noticed her.

She thinks that he might be an artist; an artist with the name of Sylar. He seems the creative type. She never asked him what profession he has. She tells herself that it’s better to keep her distance to him.

She sometimes sees him with many beautiful women. But it is never the same woman twice. He’s a player. A ‘love them, leave them’ man, and she doesn’t need that. Doesn’t want to expose her sister to this type of man.

So when she passes him today, and he smirks at her again in that intriguing way of his, she just ignores him. He’s dangerous, she tells herself as she goes down the steps. And she is late for her work. Thinking about him will not help her pay the bills, and it will not feed her little sister.

One more minute until her shift is over. She longingly looks at the clock on the wall, right next to the sign that says ‘World’s best coffee here’. The clock ticks slowly, and she watches the handle move in slow motion.

There, finally!

“I’m off!” she calls back to her boss, who is standing behind the grill. She’s in and out of the backroom for employees faster than anyone can blink. Grabbing her jacket, she makes her way to the door. The jacket is all she needs; nothing else. She has no car, can’t afford it. She has no bike, someone might steal it, and it wouldn’t last anyway.

She begins the well-known walk home; through the shadows and the dark. She isn’t scared of the dark. Never has been.

~ * ~

On a street, under a lamp, a woman and a man are standing. The man looks like the average-Joe. He is wearing a long coat. It looks worn out and a little scruff. The woman, with red long hair, is thin and a little pale, but eternally beautiful.

“Why did you call me to earth, Anna?” asks the man wearily. He hasn’t been to earth for ... for a long time.

“You have a new mission, brother. It is important and will be the only thing that you’ll do for some time to come.” She says in a calm and collected voice. It’s void of emotions.

“What is my mission?” he asks.

“Castiel, demons have taken earth’s surface to become a new battle ground against us. They have corrupted this city, and they are fighting us. We need to stop them.” She says.

“I know. We are fighting this fight now for a long time. What has changed that you called me down to earth for this?”

“Those that we have fought before were more or less mindless little fish. Brother, there is someone more threatening out there. Someone who is thinking and has a plan. You need to swift through the mindless and insignificant thread, and find him. He is the one that is threatening the balance of the fight.”

The man tilts his head to the side, and then after a moment looks back to the woman. “You believe this demon to be a real thread to us?”

“Everything until now indicates that he is trying to free Him from the depth of Hell.” Even though her voice is void of emotions, her face looks troubled.

“Lucifer...”

“Farewell and good luck!” with that the woman is suddenly gone and the man is left alone, standing under the light. He is deep in tough about the revelation. He knows that his mission is very important, and that he would do everything to find the demon that is trying to free Him.

But at the same time, Castiel knows that everything on earth has changed since the last time he had been here. He decides then that he’d find someone who would help him, someone who is honest enough to help him guide him in this alien, human world.

He doesn’t watch where he is going, because nothing human can hurt him anyway. And because of that, he doesn’t look to the side, and he isn’t cautious just before he crosses the street.

The next few things happened fast from a human’s point of few. A car comes in fast. A woman behind him screams, and just before the car crashes with Castiel, he feels someone grabbing on to his coat, and yanking him back.

~ * ~

“Oh my god! Are you alright?” asks the young woman, still clutching his coat tight. She had just prevented him from crossing the street and running into the speeding car.

“Yes.” He answered. He doesn’t move, instead looks slowly down to where her hands were still holding his coat like a life line.

The woman follows his gaze and then blushing lets go of it abruptly after noticing it herself.

“Are you sure you are alright?” she asks after another moment, when he doesn’t say or do anything. He tilts his head, and stares at her. Like he was trying to see the words that came out of her mouth. For a moment he looks concentrated, but then his face relaxes again and he replies evenly, calm and void of emotions.

“Yes.”

The woman looks at him, uncertain if she should continue home or take care of him. “Em… you seem to be in some kind of shock…” she mutters, and it isn’t really directed towards him. “Maybe it isn’t such a good idea to let you wonder off alone… not now at least.”

She looks around and then says “I live down the street… how about you just come and rest a little… I think I might have some coffee left too… Just until your head clears.”

He notices that the woman seems to be concerned for his health. So he only nods and follows her when she starts to pull on his arm.

~ * ~

The walk back to the Sullivan apartment is quiet and uneventful. Both, Castiel and Chloe don’t talk. She is still a little flipping because of the adrenaline in her system, and she figures that he might be still under shock.

When they arrive at the flat, Chloe goes to the kitchen area and starts making coffee. She notes that Mary’s shoes are thrown next to the entrance and here Chloe would have shouted at her to remove them or put them into her room, but because of the man, she doesn’t.

Instead she ignores the shoes and goes about making coffee. She busies herself, and notes that the man is still standing by the door, not moving. He seems to be watching her, without an emotion on his face.

She is getting nervous when he still doesn’t talk, instead just continues to stand there next to the door. She wonders if this ‘taking a shocked almost run over by a car man home’ might have been wrong of her, maybe he is a serial killer on the loose, and she might now be his next victim. Maybe she should have brought him to the hospital instead. At least then she could have shoved him off to some nurse or doctor, and just left after that.

Darn.

When she is just finished, and lifts her head to indicate to him that he should sit down, she notices him suddenly stand there in front of her. She gasps in surprise, and takes a step back. Her heart is pumping strong and fast.

He opens his mouth and starts to speak; his speech is void of human emotion. “My name is Castiel. I am an Angel of the Lord. I need your help in an important mission.”

She is dumbstruck, and her mouth hangs open. But both she and the man turn around when they hear a gasp coming from her sister’s door.

~ * ~

Mary jumps to her sister and is happy. “I knew it! Angels are real!” she excitedly exclaims.

“That’s not an angel! Mary, that’s a very confused guy who thinks he is an angel, because of a trauma… Almost hitting a car might have scared him more than I thought!” Chloe mutters, she feels sorry that the man is soo confused, but at the same time knows that he would be better off in hospital.

“I’m here because of a mission of great importance. But I need help…” says the man she had saved earlier. He is still, doesn’t move around, and if it wasn’t for the absurdity of his statement, she wouldn’t have thought him crazy.

“You need to help him, if he really has a mission!” says her little sister with excitement. She’s read a lot of books about the supernatural, and therefore considers herself an expert on the theme.

“I was helping him. And I’m helping him now again, by getting him to a hospital!” Chloe stamps her foot down, she knows if she doesn’t stop her sister’s childish excitement, then not only would she get caught up in it, it would defiantly only make the man’s condition worse.

“Hey! You can’t just do that! You were chosen for a good reason! You’re living like a saint… so finally something good is happening to you!” says Mary offended. This was how every good book started; a saint-like heroine on a mission to help with a bigger cause.

“Mary, stop now! And you, you’ll come with me to the hospital!” she says by turning to the man she had earlier saved. This all was turning into one silly soap opera episode, thought Chloe as she started towards him.

“No way!” and with that Mary throws herself in front of her sister, intent on not letting the mysterious man, who really might be an angel, out of her sight. “I bet you he could prove it if he wanted to! I mean, that he is an angel!”

Chloe irritated now, tries to free herself from the grasps of her sister. “Listen to yourself. Does that guy look fluffy, or like he has the wings and a halo?”

The man only says dejectedly “Angel have no halo!”

“See?” Chloe tells her sister, having finally freed herself from her.

Mary now huffs and quickly replies “But if he did prove that he’s a real angel, you won’t be sending him away!”

“Mary!”

“If it is proof you need…” says the man, and suddenly the lights flicker, and thunder is heard from outside. Both sisters turn to the man in the long insignificant coat.

~ * ~

It shouldn’t be possible. And somehow it is. There… there are wings that seem to look see-through. They spread over the walls, and then the wings spread, and it all looks mighty impressive.

The lights flicker, and in that same moment thunder and lightning wrecks outside.

Both sisters are amazed and horrified at the same moment. This isn’t how they ever would have imagined angels to be.

And as the wings fold and disappear into nothing again, the lights stop flickering.

No one speaks, no one moves, until the man finally says. “I need your help. And you will help me, Chloe Sullivan.”

He seems very sure of her answer, and for some reason Chloe knew that there was only one answer she could give.
