"the league of extraordinary nobodies"

the EL-P show last night was friggin' amazing. and what a great crowd! i had no idea that EL-P had such a loyal fanbase lurking here in ottawa.

EL-P was chalk full of energy and showmanship, as were both his DJ Mr. Dibbs, and his hype man the Mighty Quin. i gotta say, i think in this case to call him a hype man does not give due credit to his level of involvement in the show (though i may just be ignorant of such things); he acted much more as a counterpoint of a true duo with EL-P, trading off on many of the complicated lyrical flows equally (and perhaps this is even more difficult for Quin, memorizing all these intricate lyrics that he did not write?). to his credit, Mr. Dibbs held his own, with a couple of really sweet solo intermission-type moments. he's got some nice beats and scratches.

much to my pleasure, EL-P performed almost all the songs off i'll sleep when you're dead. he opened with tasmanian pain coaster, but then cut it short going right into smithereens (stop cryin'). he then played (and i don't remember the exact order); EMG, no kings, up all night, the overly dramatic truth, run the numbers, the league of extraordinary nobodies, and of course poisenville kids no wins. he also fit in a couple of older tracks, and an impromptu jam of can i kick it?.

all around, a seriously awesome evening. i would have stayed for dizzee rascal, but it was already midnight when EL-P finished, and i had to get up at 6a.m. for work. still, totally worth the money i shelled out for that show. totally.
