My Rights Versus Yours - A Song of Ice and Fire playlist Note: This playlist started as a collection of artists that reminded me of the ASOIAF series, that I've been putting together since I started reading the books a couple of months ago because that's the kind of thing I do whenever something leaves me with this level of obsession. After some editing, I left the songs that remind me most of specific characters, situations, pairings, places or the overall feel of the series. Enjoy!
1. My Right Versus Yours - The New Pornographers
Flying the flags of new empires in rags
But now it’s your rights versus mine
2. Ghost Under Rocks - Ra Ra Riot
Here you are,
you are breathing life into ghosts under rocks
Like notes found in pocket coats of your fathers
lost and forgotten,
All, all, all your soaking wet dreams, you’ve spent them
3. Vesuvius - Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan, follow the path, it leads to an article of imminent death
Sufjan, follow your heart, follow the flame, or fall on the floor
Sufjan, the panic inside, the murdering ghost that you cannot ignore
4. When you were young - The Killers
He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus but he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young
And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live
5. Two - The Antlers
Tell me when you think that we became so unhappy, wearing silver rings with nobody clapping.
6. Fake Empire - The National
Turn the light out say goodnight no thinking for a little while
Let's not try to figure out everything at once
It’s hard to keep track of you falling through the sky
We’re half-awake in a fake empire
7. Wake Up - Arcade Fire
Something filled up my heart with nothing, someone told me not to cry
We’re just a million little god’s causin rain storms turning every good thing to rust
8. Landscape - Florence and the Machine
She’s just like the weather, can’t hold her together
Born from dark water, daughter of the rain and snow
Cause it’s burning through the bloodline
It’s cutting down the family tree
Growing in the landscape, darling, in between you and me
9. Heirloom - Sufjan Stevens
When your heirloom’s wilted brown
When the devil’s pushing down
When your mourning has a sound
And you hesitate to laugh
How quickly will your joy pass
10. Hometwon Glory - Adele
I like it in the city when two worlds collide
You get the people and the government
Everybody taking different sides
Shows that we ain’t gonna stand shit
Shows that we are united
11. Ready to start - Arcade Fire
I would rather be wrong
Than live in the shadows of your song
My mind is open wide
And now I’m ready to start
12. These are the fables - The New Pornographers
And wind your back, come back to the river
The currents speed by and hope the men fear
The hammer comes down so hard on the evening
Cracking the dawn of your days are repeat
These are fables on my street
13. Elephant Gun - Beirut
If I was young, I’d flee this town
I’d bury my dreams underground
As did I, we drink to die, we drink tonight
Far from home, elephant gun
Let’s take them down one by one
14. Adventures in Solitude - The New Pornographers
More than begin, but less than forget
But spirits born from the not happened yet
Gathering there to pay off a debt brought back from the wars
15. All the things I’ve done - The Killers
I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand
Another head aches, another heart breaks
I’m so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection
16. From the Mouth of Gabriel - Sufjan Stevens
Now I know this is strange to hear from the mouth of God
It was something like a scene from mars
In a struggle between loves and lies
The angle kept his face covered for to keep his word
And while I spoke something left from my life
Forget about the past, be at rest, I’ll make things right
And while I held you at best you nearly died
Forget about the past and I’ll try to make things right
17. A Dustland Fairytale - The Killers
Out here, the good girls die
And the sky won’t snow
Now Cinderella, don’t you go to sleep, it’s such a bitter form of refuge
Oh don’t you know, the kingdom’s under siege
And everybody needs you
18. Heartlines - Florence and the Machine
Oh the river, oh the river, it’s running free
And oh the joy, oh the joy it brings to me
But I know it’ll have to drown me
Before I can breathe easy
And I’ve seen it in the flights of birds I’ve seen it in you
The entrails of the animals, the blood running through
But in order to get to the heart I think sometimes you’ll have to cut through
19. The Bleeding Heart Show - The New Pornographers
Our golden handshake has been smashed into this shape
It’s taken magic to a primitive new place
Watch them run, although it’s the minimum, heroic.
