Classes and examinations have been canceled. Students are being whisked away from Hogwarts by frightened parents. Ministry officials are staying at Hogwarts. Everyone is waiting for Dumbledore's funeral.

Was she under pressure and needed to pad the book out, feeling that a reduction in page count would be counted as a failure? Did she take too much notice of all the fan sites and decide that romance was necessary?

I blame it on alchemy. The 6th step goes with Venus, and the chemical wedding, which is often symbolized as sex in various locations and positions.

See if you agree there's a pattern that the planets for the 7 steps of alchemy go with the 7 books:

1. Saturn, goes with lead, the raw material, Harry entering WW
2. Jupiter, Ron is Jupiter as a Pisces, and was a major player
3. Moon, Lupin was a major factor
4. Mercury, Hermione is Mercury, and she was a major factor
5. Mars, goes with war against Umbridge, and DD vs the MoM
6. Venus, goes with a book full of love and love potions
7. Sun, Harry becomes gold, the Philosopher's stone

I've just read that the Stone stays in the vessel for 6 days, and then the vessel is opened. That goes with Harry not going back to the castle next year. The vessel has many names, depending on the stage of the work. After the group of names that includes "castle", the next group includes grave, tomb, prison, and dungeon, and the final group includes a garden with red and white roses. It's difficult to find a complete list of symbols in one place, but I'm expecting to see some of those things in book 7.
