Chapter 17: A Sluggish Memory

Sep 01, 2005 00:21

Returning to Hogwarts after Christmas (who else chuckled at McGonagall's truly insouciant greeting to her students?) Harry gets up with Hermione to fill her in on his news about Snape & Malfoy. Like a dog with a good bone, Harry refuses to give up his theory about what it could mean, still insisting that Malfoy is in league with Voldemort. ( Read more... )

McGonagall barely looks when it's the one time the Floo is hooked up. Why no security this time?

Upon returning, Harry sees Buckbeak, Hermione visited Buck - er, Witherwings, and Hermione is her old self for a change. Then she says "I've got something for you, Harry", followed by "Abstinence". I'm wondering if abstinence is a clue to why Hermione is herself again.

I just love the way Harry and Hermione sit and talk. It's a pity the only place we see that is not in one of the romantic relationships.

I'd bet if the unfinished sentences between them about Ron were finished, we'd be surprised. It looks like one of the tricks from Emma. Either way, Hermione now seems more angry than hurt.

"Everyone would know I could apparate if I wanted" shows Ron is concerned with appearances, and contrasts with Harry not being fussed because it's uncomfortable.

Seamus' hoselike jet of water seems to show that happiness increases magic power, as Tonks and Merope show that sadness diminishes it.

I hope Phineas knows why Snape trusts Dumbledore, and isn't just spouting off again about Harry questioning Dumbledore.

There is no mention of a crack in the ring's stone in either memory. I don't think we can be certain whether it was from becoming a horcrux or not, but that's what I'm thinking. Voldemort asked about horcruxes after killing the Riddles, so he probably didn't make horcruxes from their deaths. Unless he did, and in questioning Slughorn, he just wants to know about making 7 of them.

We learn that Dumbledore is a very skilled Legilimens, and I think he's a Parselmouth, too. What we learned about underage magic in a wizard's house makes me wonder what the Weasley kids got away with.
