Music Monday...AN ENTIRELY ORIGINAL IDEA....

Nov 15, 2010 13:49

...just not MY original idea! Ha!

One of my friends (known by loosen_up_judas here) started doing this, and her pick of the week was a lovely alternafolkster-hipsterish lady musician by the name of Allison Weiss, whom I've adored for years after watching this rooftop music video right over here on Myspace back in the day, per Ash's orders. Check out Ashley's entire Allison tribute post over here.

I've decided to take it two steps forward and one step back. I'm going to try and make at least one music post a week, but I'm going to introduce you to SIX DIFFERENT ARTIST with a short blurb about them [possibly stolen from Wiki if I'm hungovertired]. So here we go!

This is one of my all time favorite bands as well as the first band I saw in concert! The lead singer, Jenny Lewis, is absolutely stunning as a vocalist and bold in her fashion. They're like the royalty of the indie scene, both old and new. They started back in the mid/late nineties and rose to underground fame steadily, culminating in the critically acclaimed album More Adventurous. I suggest starting with their second album, Execution of All Things, and following with More Adventurous. These are probably their best albums to date. If you're more into pop, follow with Under the Black Light, if you're more into lo-fi/omg that indie music is so mellow and quiet, go with Take Offs and Landings.

LESBIAN TWINS!!! But seriously, they're fantastic. Both songwriters, both hilarious and witty, but their music is moody and kinda emo, but it works! Very nice harmonies, my favorite albums are If It Was You and The Con, but honestly any of their albums are a good starting point. I usually suggest going chronologically, but if you're into pop, check out their later work. They're becoming a soundtrack favorite.

PRINCESS SUPERSTAR

This lady is awesome! I've been into her for a few years and I love her to death, but her music is hard to find on the shelves! At least in my area. If you live in NYC you'll have no problem, she's based in the Big Apple. Basically the best lady rapper I've ever heard, she's got great lyrics and an awesome message to a lot of her songs. HOWEVER, very crass, very honest and extremely sexual, sometimes she's just out to have fun and get under something warm. Remixes galore, she's all over the interwebs. Check her out where ever you get the opportunity! I suggest starting with Princess Superstar Is and then anywhere from there is fine!

ESTHERO

I'm wary of suggesting Esthero only because she's broken my heart and I hope she doesn't do the same to you! One of the most ethereal and enigmatic artists I've come across, she pulled a Nelly Furtado before Nelly even knew she was doing it. Actually, it was Nelly following Esthero, but that's all rumors, so I digress. Originally in a two person group under the name Esthero, this wikked little grrrl broke out on her own seven years later under the same name. The video is from the first album, which has a great triphop feel to it. Her second album is more r & b inspired, but eloquent nonetheless. It's basically what r & b is suppose to sound like. I suggest going in order with this girl and don't forget to grab a few nonalbum tracks along the way (one EP and one single between the two). Unfortunately she has taken off into the ether...and I'm still not over losing That Girl to the mists of her own ambivalence.

What a great musician! She's a rapper with a conscience, I've only got one album by her (self titled) and I play it whenever I'm in the mood for something with a good beat and a great message. She's UK based I believe, and was pretty popular a few years ago across the pond, but I'm not sure anymore. This is an edited video, if I remember correctly she's not afraid to throw a few choice words around...what's not to love?! Check her out.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHH SO MUCH LOVE FOR THIS MUSICIAN/ACTRESS! She's seriously one of the greatest lyricists I've ever come across. A lot of her newer stuff (such as in the video) is beautiful 50s inspired melodies, but a lot of it retains the witty, even hilarious, words of her early works. I own a few albums by her, the one to start on I think is Get Away From Me, or something before that, and then grab Obligatory Villager, which was my first dip into her pool of awesome. She's a neat person, and she was also the sister in P.S. I Love You, in case you were wondering why she looked slightly familiar.

So I hope you enjoyed my little tour of music on my shelf. It'll probably be a mix of old and new for awhile, I have quite the backlog. No seriously, it's terrible impressive. I'll take a picture sometime. Have a great Monday, and remember IT MOST DEFINITELY GETS BETTER!
