OKAY MUSIC TIME
Albums you NEED to go get, like, right now:
Martha Wainwright - "I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too"
OMG MARTHA MARTHA MARTHA I LOVE MARTHA. Seriously, this family seems to be blessed with some of the best singer-songwriters of the past two generations. Once again Martha performs brilliantly, her voice the perfect blend of melodrama, emotional upheaval, regret, passion and yes, even happiness (but don't worry, it's rare). These songs are like a continuation of the thought processes brought to us by her debut album, which was most excellent as well, but these are more mature, more poignant. Martha is dealing with some tough(er) shit, apparently. Or maybe I'm just looking to much into it...who knows, either way, it's a great group of songs, and I highly recommend this artist and album to you
If you Like Rufus Wainwright, Laura Veirs, Ani DiFranco, Emily Haines you'll probably like Martha Wainwright.
Kate Walsh - "Tim's House"
Kate Walsh's debut album is everything an "easy listening" indie pop album is suppose to be. It reminds me of if Lisa Loeb went more in a Laura Veirs direction. The album title is actually taken from the fact that the album was apparently made in her producer's (Tim's) house hahaha. I go to sleep to this album a lot, so I haven't really paid attention to lyrics at all, but the tunes are definitely chill. Also, this album has been available online for awhile, but she just recently got signed, I think, so the RC decided to put out a hard copy.
If you Like Laura Veirs, Lisa Germano, Emily Haines, Anais Mitchell, Damien Rice you'll probably like Kate Walsh.
Katy Perry - "One of the Boys"
No image because I couldn't find one small enough (I think it's under strict distribution restrictions by EMI...bastard major record labels). THESE ARE AWESOME SONGS!!! Don't be turned off by the saturation of popular radio with "I Kissed a Girl", I highly recommend turning off the radio, and listening to the ENTIRE ALBUM before all the singles get old over the next year or so, because honestly, she's a great artist, worth a listen. A little pretentious, but way smarter than the average pop princess. She's like if Madonna and Lindsay Lohan had a child. Seriously. Only she looks like Zooey Deschanel LOL That's actually half the reason I checked her out. But yeah, all her songs are super intense and "Fuck you boys!" or "Date me right or don't date me at all!" but there's also a few slower songs, just as intense though. The absolute gems are probably "Mannequin" and "I'm Still Breathing". "I'm Still Breathing" will take you by surprise, it's so different from the rest of the album's mood and message.
If you Like P!nk, Christina Aguilara, Ferras, Zooey Deschanel's looks (lol) you'll probably like Katy Perry.
YAY NEW CYNDI!!!! And in my opinion, she's doing just fine :) This album is definitely a get-up-and-dance album, I love it, she sounds a lot different from earlier works. I've always sort of been a fringe Lauper fan, I purchased her Essential collection back in high school and loved it, and I have So Unusual on LP, but never really got into her. Now I definitely have a platform to dive in, these are great songs! A little too much the same to listen to all the way though unless you're really in a Cyndi/dancing mood, but definitely a great album. The album art is fun, too :) It's very classic Cyndi.
I don't think I have to tell you you'll like her if you like someone else...I'm pretty sure we all know Cyndi Lauper hahaha.
Other noteworthy albums:
Brenda Russell - self titled (6/10)
Ferras - Aliens and Ranbows (6/10)
Cornelia - Capsule EP (9/10) EXCELLENT!!!!
Dresden Dolls - No,Virginia (still need to listen!! IT'S ON MY TO-DO LIST!! HAHAHA)
That's it for now. Let me know if this is helpful/you check out these artists/albums!!
