After reading several sections of the Bible for my Secular and Sacred class, i came to the realization that most churches have it wrong. God does not love you unconditionally. Jesus may, but if you tick off God... that's a problem. There are numerous incidents in the Bible where God gets angry and threatens to / or kills several people. Also, He likes to show off. Look at the plagues for example... He tells Moses to go talk to Pharaoh, but tells Moses off the bat the pharaoh is gonna say no, God will "Harden his heart". Ok, um, if you want your people to get out of Egypt, why create all those issues? He basically wanted to denounce the Egyptian religion, and prove that he was #1... and if there's a few deaths of the firstborn son along the way, hey, that's just war casualty. AND, while they're in the desert, God promises them all this land outside of the desert, but they have to go in and kill the people who are already living there, and crush their idols! But, God promises them victory, they are the Chosen People, it's ok to do that. God almost kills all the Israelites too, when Aaron makes the golden calf idol, God gets pissed and tells Moses they're as good as dead. Moses pleads for their lives, but then goes down from the mountain and says HE'S gonna kill them.
the infallibility of God is questionable too, because even He says He was wrong to have the flood. "Gee.. maybe i shouldn't have done that. Here's a rainbow, it won't happen again."
And how can Christianity hate sex? Has anyone ever READ the Song of Songs? That's all about two lovers talking about open fields and "blossoming flowers".
Plus, there's usually TWO stories for every one in the Bible. From the parts i've read, there's TWO stories of creation, TWO stories for Moses and the arc (one saying 2 of each, the other saying 7 of every clean animal, and 2 of all the other ones), and TWO stories for the prophecy of Jesus (one when he's supposed to be named Immanuel meaning "God has come"). How can people use the Bible to support arguments if it's internally conflicted?
What about the books of the Bible that weren't canonized? I'd be interested to see what didn't make the saintly cut.
Anyway... yea, I'm sure i've aggravated Him for thinking these and questioning the Sacred Text. But, this Sacred Text was written by man, who is, by creation, fallible himself (another reason why Bible arguments don't really hold ground, just because some old guy 2000 years ago wrote it down, doesn't make it law, or justified. What if Manson made a bible? Or Scientology, what the fuck is that? Try to justify things using L. Ron Hubbard... yea, that'll work out).
The end, time to get back to work...
