ETA (09/09/2018): Recipe for the Shooter's Sandwich added

I rarely expend as much effort on a dish/recipe as I did for this glorified steak sandwich.

What perfect bread bowls! And the shooter's sandwich looks yummy, too... I need to get another starter going, maybe I will do so this week.

Next time, dry some of your starter and store it away. :)

PS: I was pleasantly surprise at the way the buns rounded up. They looked pretty flat for the first half of the bake.

I had thought of that, but with our moving and putting everything in storage for 9 months, it wasn't something I found desirable. Now I'm having a devil of a time finding whole rye, so will give it a go with rye flour.

The look fantastic - and I bet they taste just as fine!

Is there a reason you particularly want to use rye flour? I made my 2nd starter with whole wheat (and canned pineapple juice) for the first few days and then I switched over to all purpose.flour and water.

Yes, I prefer rye. I don't use all purpose flour unless I absolutely have to for a recipe, like the pulla I made yesterday. That wouldn't be right with a rye flour.

I use the pineapple juice method as well.
