Romanian-Themed Christmas Eve Supper: Fasole Batuta (Mashed White Beans) and Bacalao (Salt Cod)

My mom did 99% of the cooking at our house. However, one dish that my dad could, and did make, twice a year, was the white beans that were featured in this menu. I've not been able to find it in any of my google searches of Romanian dishes so I wonder if the pairing of mashed white beans (Great Northern, navy, or cannellini) and soaked salt cod was

What a lovely touching post Maria! This Christmas Eve menu is truly European in its origin. I grew up with breaded, deep fried carp myself. The use of mashed white beans sounds wonderful -- I am sooo tempted to try it -- I love beans and I could disguise it in the mashed potatoes... I eat with a bean hater haha.

My parents weren't religious so didn't talk about traditions much. I'm glad I could replicate some of the food that I remember from the days I had them.

Traditions are seldom explained. They just happen -- at least that is what happened in my experience. I never knew why they ate fish on Christmas Eve. I don't really think they knew it themselves. :D

I was born in the former Yugoslavia, an area that is now part of Serbia, but we spoke Romanian at home. And we left when I was 7 so I've lived in Canada for 53 yrs. I've never been back in Yugoslavia since and never been to Romania ... though my nephew and SIL visited Romania (and Hungary, where she's from).

There's no one left to visit, sadly.
