I've got a package of bbq'd sausages (Grill 'Ems) in my freezer and had pictured eating them inside hot dog buns.

But nothing so crass as PURCHASED hot dog buns.

I made my own using a half batch of the hamburger recipe found here. I made a couple of changes in the recipe ... first, I wanted to reduce the amount of sugar used so I halved the ( Read more... )

Those look so tempting! Bet they tasted better than regular buns, too. I expect you could make this without the sourdough starter?

Thank you. They're great fresh out of the oven but even out off the fridge, after a fast buzz in the microwave (you could wrap them in foil and reheat in a hot oven) they're pretty good.

The original recipe posted (hamburger buns) was made without starter. I just added the starter as an experiment.

It's a pretty fast recipe as well. You can shape some of the dough into hamburger buns (3-3 1/2 oz) and some into hot dog buns (2 oz).

I love homemade buns for sausages, hotdogs, lobster rolls, tuna salad and even egg salad. I make them up and toss them in the freezer. Yours made with sourdough starter sound excellent!

The starter part of the recipe was a pretty successful adaptation, I think. Only one more sourdough recipe to post and then I REALLY have to take a break. :)

That hot dog... Bring it here, please!

I'm a big fan of the cheddar cheese Grill 'Ems.

I was tempted by the cheddar cheese but gave them a pass in favour of the Oktoberfest(?). Next time. PS: I know they're not healthy but sometimes you just have to indulge. Like when I made those corn dogs with the grill'ems a couple of years ago. :)

Yes. Life without the occasional indulgent would be very flat, indeed!
