Sweet and Savoury Egg Rolls

Sep 13, 2015 21:31

I love egg rolls but haven't ever made any myself until this past weekend when I brought home a package of wrappers and enough inspiration to try both a sweet and savoury filling.

For the sweet filling, I made up a batch of cinnamon-apple caramel syrup which I'd showed in the July roundup and used to fill wonton cups and as a topping for pancakes ( Read more... )

Yum! This is a much easier recipe that I have previously used for eggroll. I confess that while I adore them, I rarely make them. Perhaps I need to think about doing some this weekend. I know my friends would help me eat the extras.

Inspired, as usual!

Thank you. :)

I had to go shopping this morning and buy another package of egg roll wrappers so I could fry up the rest of the filling. Didn't want to waste the oil either. ALMOST bought a 2nd package as well but put it back at the last minute.

Then ended up having 2 egg roll wrappers left ... so I opened a can of E.D. Smith cherry pie filling. Now what do I do with the rest of the can cause I DON'T want to go back to the grocery store.

PS: You can also add a cup or two of bean sprouts to the cabbage mixture if you want something more similar to the restaurant ones.

I hate it when you end up with a mess of something left over. I'm like you - no wasting.

Can't help with the filling question, but I bet you do something inspired with it!

Inspired ... maybe. My criteria right now is fast and easy.

I'm thinking of just trasferring the pie filling to a tupperware container and throwing it in the freezer. Worry about it another day.

I played with presentation using the 2 cherry egg rolls I made, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the last maraschino cherry in the jar and a 'smear' of the filling from the can. And then I ate it.

Pooped now. :)

Using commercial wrappers made the process very simple though I know some people would make their own. :)

I LOVE egg rolls and these sound terrific. I've never made dessert rolls though but I won't be able to say that for very long. What a great idea.

Thank you. While I was picking up the wrappers and shredded coleslaw for the turkey ones, I spotted the apples and decided to make the sweet filling as well, especially as it's also great over pancakes and under ice cream. Enjoy ... and you might want to add the bean sprouts too. I TOTALLY forgot about them though I've had them in restaurant egg rolls.
