The only thing wrong with having a ham bone with meat in your freezer is only having ONE ham bone with meat in your freezer.

I had forgotten that I left a couple of big chunks of ham in with the ham bone the last time I cooked a big smoked shoulder/picnic ham. BONUS!!

I normally only buy a ham at Christmas and while a big expense at the time, it never ceases to amaze me just how far you can stretch one ham. And even when you think it's all used up you can use the bone to create wonderful dishes like this xx http://hotlyspiced.com

I usually buy a smoked picnic ham at 99 cents a pound and don't spend more than $10 for it. Between the liquid that I cook the ham in which I strain, freeze and use for stock, the bone and the meat itself ... there are a LOT of meals that I can get out of it.

Hehe, it's like a chicken - one chicken will usually provide my wife and myself with about 4 meals... Roast chicken breast, then pull off the legs and wings... barbecued deliciousness, then you can harvest all the scraps off the carcass for fried chicken or something, and then finally cook up the carcass in a stock or soup.

Never tried cooking a ham bone... the hams we've bought in the past are usually off the bone. Looks like it's very useful though... will keep a look out something like this.

The ham is found wrapped in netting and you have to boil it (I usually add pickling spices to the pot) and then peel off the netting when it's done. Here's a nice picture of the ham in the package.

Totally by chance ... I had to cut the slice of challah in half because it was too tall and long for the toaster. :)

It looks fabulous. I love anything simmered with smoked pork (especially if the bone is there!) and my mum used to make the best smoked pork ribs-based soup in the world. I have never seen them here or in France alas... Sissi

Smoked pork does give everything a wonderful flavour. I remember my mom making smoked pork rib soup as well with white beans.
