Indian desserts are a great treat and one of my favourites are gulab jamun ... deep fried dough balls soaked in flavoured syrup and served hot or cold.
I'm fortunate that I can enjoy this Indian treat at 4 different convenience levels.
1. Drive to the Indian grocery store and buy a box of ready made gulab jamun ($4.99 per pound)
2. Drive to the Indian grocery store and buy a pop top can of ready made gulab jamun (price unknown as I've never done this)
3. Drive to the Indian grocery store and buy a box of gulab jamun mix, then make and deep fry the gulab jamun
4. Go to my pantry, get out the milk powder etc, make and deep fry the gulab jamun.
Needless to say, #1 has been my most common solution to my cravings. :)
The first time I did #4, about 1 1/2 yrs ago, and before I owned a camera, I made 2 batches which were progressively more successful. But in the meantime, I've forgotten a few tips and tricks which I've now made note of.
I'm going to make another batch tomorrow or Friday, using a slightly different version of the recipe, and then post the recipe that I like best. In the meantime, enjoy this teaser picture from the first batch I made.
