The last time I was this excited about a currently-on TV show, it was the start of BattleStar Galactica remake. Well, and I heart Eureka mightily too. But BSG started ... what? Three years ago, and Eureka was a summertime fling.
I don't watch much TV. Very little, actually. Mostly I find the writing and characterizations to be horrible (yeah, I'm a critic), and I want well-conceived storylines that aren't the same ol' rehash of what's come before. I don't mind retellings, actually, but they have to be really well done retellings.
Now I find myself totally addicted to Heroes. Totally. They men in the house aren't all that interested, so it's Katie and me huddled around my computer screen so we can catch up on the episodes. They were recorded on my DVR, but it's balking on those recordings ... don't ask me why. Just trust that there will be a calm-but-edged call into Comcast this weekend.
Last night, K and I watched five episodes and decided that brownies were better than shots for a Heroes binging game -- not that I'm encouraging my teen-aged daughter to participate in drinking games, mind you. Still, brownie games? I'm all over that. Eat one brownie every time someone refers to "saving the world." Eat a half brownie every time someone mentions Sylar. Eat two when Peter gets to use a power.
Yeah. So I made a batch of brownies, and they were all gone by the end of the evening. I only had two, despite the rules of the game. I won't say who ate the rest. Mmmmmm, brownies. That's what Friday nights are for, Charlie Brown. Besides, it's Mom-Daughter Bonding. Brownies and Fandoms. Good stuff.
What is it about this show that I love so much? The idea of ordinary people finding out they're extraordinary? That the characters are very well-acted and well-rounded (always a bonus)? The whole rising to the challenge of saving the world against impossible odds thing? The interwoven storyline? The fact that I can't figure out if I like or hate some of the characters and, regardless, I'm not blase about any of them? That they're chalk-full of archetypes and shadows? And then there's the fact that I don't think the main villain has even been seen on screen yet. Sylar's bad, but I don't think he's the Ultimate Evil. Or maybe it's the wonderfully intense foreshadowing with imagery? Then there is the simple fact that I can rarely predict what's going to happen next.
There's a lot to be said about the last one. For someone who almost always knows what's going to happen in a story even if I don't quite know how, this is an amazing, refreshing, exciting thing.
I love this show! And when we're all caught up, probably by next weekend, I'll be one more fan who has to wait until September for another fix. Drat you, network TV!!
