Weekend Adventures in Bamboo
Writing this stuff down is very cathartic and I don't do it nearly enough. So here comes some more.
I did it. I bought so me bamboo. The goal is to make a privacy screen between our miniscule back patio and the new houses going up beyond our back fence, without filling our neighbors' yards with bamboo, also.
Bamboo comes in two types, it seems. The kind that starts as a clump, and gradually becomes a bigger clump, and the kind that takes off running in whatever direction it can go. Keep in mind that bamboo is the fastet growing plant. So I got some plastic bamboo barrier to stop the bamboo. It's 24 inches wide, and you're suppose to bury it in the ground where you want the bamboo to end.
So I got the bamboo in the ground, and made my own sort of barrier by leaving it in the pot and breaking out the sides of the pot with my shovel. I also got some flat barrier plastic, but getting it in the ground involved a lot of digging. After a few hours I had sore hands and a half-buried bamboo barrier. So far the bamboo is growing noticeably up (after 3 days) but not out...yet.
