Hopefully, this will be the start of a new weekly feature, all about (ta dah!) music.
I am a huge music lover. For a long while, I had pretty much stopped listening which proves just how crappy my health really was. But I'm back and checking out more music than ever.
So each week, I hope to share some music with all of you. Maybe an album review, maybe a video, maybe a list of five best disco songs. Who knows? And feel free to ask me music questions - I listen to just about every form of pop music from rock to rap, from punk to country and pretty much everything in between. I also love Broadway show music and I have an extensive collection of that also, so if that's your love, go for it. The only thing I'm not up on is modern jazz (but if you are, feel free to educate me - I'd love to learn more about it.)
So, this week, a discussion of one of my favorite things of the year - The Village Voice Pazz and Jop poll. End of the year means lots of newspapaer and magazine best of lists which also includes best albums of the year. However, the Voice goes one better. It sends out ballots to 450 music critics. Critis then choose their ten favorite albums of the year. Each vote is awarded points, from 5 points to 30 points and the critic has 100 points total to apportion among their ten choices. Points are then tallied up and every album that got a mention
is listed here. Personally, I try to get a copy of the top 50 vote getters. I have discovered some great music using this method.
This year, I correctly guessed the top three spot before the poll came out. For those of you who follow new music, you probably know the top album if not the other two.
the top three, in reverse order:
3. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
I haven't heard anything from this yet, but I have read a lot of great reviews. I have it on order. I do own some of their older albums.
2. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
I've heard a couple of songs from this and liked them both. Also on order. I have their first two albums.
1. Kanye West - Yeezus
Yes, Kanye is a jackass. He's also really talented. I've heard a bunch of the songs from this and this is crazy shit, from deep inside the twisted mind of Kanye. But you won't forget it and that's what makes a great album. On order.
The rest of the top 10 vote getters:
4. Beyoncé Beyoncé
5. Chance the Rapper Acid Rap
6. My Bloody Valentine M B V
7. Haim Days are Gone
8. Janelle Monáe Electric Lady
9. Kurt Vile Wakin on a Pretty Daze
10. Kacey Musgraves Same Trailer Different Park
