Lover's Walk - Really People? Really?

So, over at the LJ community fantas_magoria, the episode that is currently being revisted is Lover's Walk. That means people are invited to submit art, fic, meta, etc.

Anyway, several of the stories are Buffy/Spike. I am both amused and (I admit it) horrified.

Now, let me state that I haven't read the stories in question. So it's possible that are brilliantly written. My reaction is completely visceral.

1. amused
The big speech everyone remembers from this episode is Spike telling Buffy and Angel that they are going to be in love with each other forever, until it kills them. Whether that's true or not for the future, it's certainly a valid observation at the time. The thought that Buffy would suddenly decide to go off with Spike when she obviously has these incredibly strong feelings is a bit much to swallow.

2. horrified
Here's the real crux of my problem however. Spike is a stone cold murderer at this point. He reminisces about killing someone with Dru. He murders the Magic Shop owner. The only reason he doesn't murder Willow and Xander is quick thinking on Willow's pary.

Why would Buffy get into a relationship with Spike? Is it because she just can't resist those cheekbones? Or because he's such a woobie after losing Dru? Put Buffy together with Spike at this point in time and you have ruined Buffy.

And in case you're wondering, it's the same reason I don't read Buffy/Angelus. My Buffy would never do that. (Full disclosure - I read Courting Sin by Leniba which is Buffy/Angelus. And you know what? She isn't heroic in the story. She stays with a guy that she knows is murdering innocent people. She weak and morally compromised. But Leni is enough of a craftsman that I could see this happening, but few have her skill. And truthfully, my biggest wish is for Buffy to stake him.)

I have several Spike/Buffy lovers on my flist. I'd love to hear your viewpoint.
