I really disliked Xander in S2 b/c of his behaviour, but I understood that he was only 17, and Angelus *had* been killing people. And in S3 when he used Faith to try and kill Angel, I really, really, disliked him.
As samsom said above, the argument he used in Selfless was pure gall. I was pleased that Buffy took him to task about it.
However, Xander did have his good moments, some very great moments, in fact. A fine example of a good character.
I don't have a problem with his statements in Selfless. I t takes him until that moment to understand what Buffy went through in S2. And after that, he does finally get it, which (I think) is why he then lets Spike live with him with no protest.
Good point. I never thought about it like that. I only thought that when it comes to someone *he* loves the rules change. Which is true for most people.
He was all like, kill Angel and be done with it, not understanding how difficult it was for Buffy.
I really think that's the moment he understands so much about what Buffy went through and finally forces him to acknowledge that souls do matter. Angel and Spike are not the same with and without souls.
I think in amongst his fear for what Buffy is going to do to Anya, there is also shame at his earlier uncharitable words.
This is a great and precise characterization of Xander in Becoming. You mentioned to tie the geeky comic reference, his fear, his wrath and his disappointment flawlessly together. Nice work!
Ouch! This captures Xander's anger in Season 2. He really did feel Buffy was not stepping up to the plate because Angel was her honey. I like the comic book hero reference and how this dovetails into canon. Nicely done.
