It's episode 1x04 where Gene talks to Sam about his corrupt mentor. I think said mentor led Gene astray, which is what got him killed, and Gene has spent his entire afterlife trying to make up for it.
I really, really hope they don't make Gene's story a mirror of Summers's, but yeah...lots of similarities cropping up. I've also wondered if baby!Guv was so wracked with remorse that he actually killed himself, but the makeup on the dead copper seems to suggest an exit wound rather than an entrance wound. So, yeah...I dunno. :/
Exactly. Plus the shallow grave scenario wouldn't make much sense if he shot himself, so I think his involvement in the corruption was what did him in.
I. Love. This. Theory. I'd never have thought it through so thoroughly as this, but it totally makes sense. I'm not sure whether I believe Gene is necessarily from as far back as the 19th century, but the rest of it: a thousand times yes! Absolutely brilliant.
It seems so clear now that the dead copper is Gene that I can't believe it never crossed my mind before. *facepalm*
I don't think Gene is actually from the 1800's, but I think he might have got sent back earlier than anyone else in the copper's limbo. Judging from his cultural references, I'd say he was probably born sometime in the early 1930's and came of age in the early fifties - he's totally cowboy crazy; likes Herb Alpert; etc etc etc.
The thing that convinced me the ghost boy is actually dead baby!Guv was seeing his driving gloves in 3x01. :) If the long blond mane didn't give it away, that sure did...no one else is allowed to wear wears gloves like that in Gene's world.
Have edited the post to include a pic of the gloves - I think after this, the gloves and the Guv's white loafers should get their own spinoff series. ;)
Nice.! I like how you've thought this out. I don't know if Gene comes from that far back but I would love a cyclical ending like the one you've envisioned. :)
Well, like I told scarletumbrella above, I don't think Gene is actually from that far back either, but I do think he got sent back further than anyone else in the copper's limbo. I think he was probably killed sometime in the early 1950's...after 1952, at least, since that's when High Noon came out. :)
And I hope there's a cyclical ending too, but whatever happens, I am going to be an absolute wreck when this show ends. Given how the writers have already proven themselves so expert at deftly twisting the emotional knife in the final epsiode of s1, I'm quaking in my boots at the thought of what they'll do to us the characters when they finally wrap up the entire franchise.
I’m worried too. Even thinking of Gene gives me a warm feeling, & the less said about that the better. When I know I’m about to see the dead cop I can’t even look at the tv. I want to remember the Gene Genie as he “is”, not end up unable to look at him.
That's the problem with theories that make so much sense...the writers don't always end up going along with them. :)
I still like the St. Michael theory, mind; but mostly because it so perfectly describes Gene's function within the copper's limbo. But I've always thought it was more of a title than a description of what he actually was, so.
