I'll readily believe that recently TV viewing generally has been down, apart from the obvious big-hitters, like the soaps, Simon Cowell TV (don't pretend to understand it...but people seem to watch it!) as there does seem to be a general lack of good quality drama on, apart from the odd specials/short series which have appeared on Sunday nights.

But traditionally, Friday nights are expected to get fewer viewers - although this now affects the ratings far less, as they count in deferred viewing, which is easy to get accurate ratings for, unlike the old system, which was wildly inaccurate. Recently, for instance, a decent Monday night show would pull 4-6million on the Beeb, whereas a Friday could struggle for 3.

It will also help that Ashes is watched more by the older end of the demographic, who don't tend to go out as much on a Friday night as the younger generation (apparently). And the younger generation who do go out are more likely to consume the prog via internet. And I suppose, as far as the Beeb are concerned, it doesn't 'need' to get high ratings as there's no chance of renewal. Although I know quite a few people involved with the show or at the BBC are seriously unimpressed by the Friday slot - they think it deserved better.
