various thinky thoughts on what's coming in 3x01 (SPOILERS!)

probably a bit of tl/dr. but...you know. it's fun to theorize about A2A again after all this time! :D

the crime of the week

from the BBC press office: The team is investigating the kidnap of a young girl, Dorothy Blonde, who was abducted as her stepmother walked her to school. With a £50,000 ransom demanded for Dotty's life the team has to work fast. However, Dotty's father, David, wants to go it alone and when newly promoted Ray panics while running the sting, it seems the family may have been better off without CID's involvement. Gene is forced to put his career on the line as he's unable to stand by and watch a young girl lose her life.

seems to me like this is a near-perfect parallel of the very event that was near-instrumental in sending alex to the 1980s: the 2008 scenario with layton and molly. obviously this won't be the first time alex will revisit this (see the firing squad dream sequence in 2×04, shaz's stabbing in 1×07, and shaz being taken hostage by a younger layton in 1×01). however, given the fourth sentence here, i think that, like in the latter two instances, she will be able to see how the situation in 1×01 would've played out if she had actually DONE SOMETHING (only, here, gene will likely be the one doing something). maybe, like the firing squad dream sequence, she'll come closer to realizing the truth: dead molly is dead and is waiting for her mum to join her in the afterlife, just like alex's father/the bowie clown was. (yeah, in the last while, i've become a bit of a supertheory convert.)

holy crap, what happened when i was in my double coma?!

from the BBC press office (emphasis added): Back in CID a lot has changed; Gene is on the run, Ray Carling has been promoted to DI and is running the show, DC Chris Skelton and WPC Shaz Granger have ended their romance and new discipline and complaints officer, DCI Jim Keats, is breathing down everyone's necks.

i bolded that one part for a reason.

we have learned throughout the first two series of A2A that if you don't listen to/stay with the guv, bad things happen. sam went missing/died in 1980 because he didn't stick with or listen to the guv. alex can't return to real!2008 until/unless gene says so. a girl died in 2×04 because she didn't listen to him. gene is/was on the run; CID has descended into chaos. once he returns to rule the roost, everything will be back to normal.

(also: ray being promoted to DI and running everything? "you will give your power to a tiler", anyone? ;))

another series, another haunting

press office: Meanwhile, Alex is being haunted by the ghost of a young policeman and with a gentle nudge from Jim she decides her only hope of getting home is to discover the truth about Gene Hunt and unlock the dark secrets of the past.

so, who is the young policeman? PC summers (she was responsible for disposing of his body, after all; and it wouldn't be the first time someone from a previous series returned (ghost of caroline price!))? the late sam tyler in his fourteen-year-old self's body? if the haunting is connected to gene's past, it could likely be young sam (earlier press release mentions we'll find out what happened to him). not to mention menacing figures = connection to harsh reality that alex may not be ready to face just yet (see bowie clown and elder!Summers).

the modern world

from ian wylie's blog: Not forgetting a modern day TV news report from Lancashire.

lancashire? what the hell does lancashire have to do with alex (a londoner)? more likely than not, absolutely nothing. i imagine it's not to do with gene, either; he's manchester born and bred. that leaves either chris or ray. it's been mentioned elsewhere that chris starts hearing stuff this series, too. maybe this is to do with him? maybe he's been in a similar situation to alex and sam for a while, and he's -- after a whole lot of nothing -- is hearing messages again.

or maybe layton, or the man depicted in the 25ml poster in 2×08, has been found and arrested.

elsewhere...

there's still a good chunk of david bowie's song, "ashes to ashes", to go...
