Maxim's info post!
Maxim is from Night Watch by Sergei Luchenyenko, and he's an Inquisitor. Also, a serial killer, but an unusual one. SO HERE IS MY EXPLANATION OF THINGS.
A serial killer? Yes, a serial killer. He is a Light Other, but only capable of seeing Dark Others. He went a long time undetected, and took this vision of the Dark in the world as a burden from God himself, to cleanse the world of evil - he also had an enchanted wooden dagger that he used to kill people. Now he's been trained as an Inqusitor, he's less likely to break out uncontrollable murder.
Light Others? Dark Others? - In Night Watch (and the subsequent books) - people with magical powers are either Light or Dark - they either use their powers for other people, or for themselves, respectively. This doesn't mean everyone Light is a good guy and everyone Dark is a bad guy. The Night Watch keeps a check on the activities of Dark Others, and the Day Watch on the Light Others. Because there's a Balance - Every Light act must be balanced by a Dark act. Sooooooo. Magic doesn't get used much at all.
So where did Maxim fit into that? - He only had power to see Dark Others, and the Light Others (purportedly) didn't know about him, so couldn't initiate him, and he wouldn't think they were anything but human anyway. So he descended into this double life where he lived with his wife and family - then, every so often, usually in the spring and autumn, he went out and mysteriously killed Dark Others with his little dagger. Eventually, the Night Watch track him down, and he faces off with Anton when he attempts to kill Yegor. Instead of killing him outright - his ability to see even the tiniest bit of Dark in someone means he is recruited as an Inquisitor.
So what powers does he have?
- His enchanted wooden dagger can kill and leave no mark. At all. Ever. It can only be used against someone classified as 'Dark' in this fashion. Against anyone else, it's just a very sharp piece of wood.
- He acts as a 'mirror' in the Twilight. This means that he is as powerful as any wizard facing him - and can reflect any magic used against him back at his opponent; now he's been trained, it'll work against virtually any spell. But this only really applies if you're from his world.
- He can step into the Twilight 'like stepping off a pavement' - Most wizards have to DECIDE to do it, and it's not usually the easiest thing in the world, especially if you haven't been trained. But Maxim can do it without thinking about it. In the real world, the Twilight is everywhere, so he can do this pretty easily. Stepping into the Twilight is something magicians in his world can do at any time - it allows them to be undetectable by regular humans, and only visible to each other - this is also how they can see full, and proper auras. The Twilight is where he draws his power from, and what he needs to use them to his full ability. It allows him to operate undetected by humans, and the Twilight has several layers. He CAN get stuck in there if he spends too long there, but given how powerful he is (the more powerful you are, the longer you can stay there), this is unlikely to happen.
- He can read auras - but only those of Dark Others.
What does Inquisitor mean?
It means that he's neither properly Light or Dark - he stands above them both and judges. He, presumably, acts with other Inquisitors that have different skills to him, but he can see the tiniest bit of Dark in someone, and is entirely unafraid of executing someone who breaches the Balance. Inquistors are who enforce punishment against both Light and Dark Others who breach the terms of the balance and can't be punished by the Night or Day Watches. He is also responsible for judging the actions of both Watches - that they are even, just and incorrupt.
He's like the ultimate white-hat magical judge you've ever seen.
How does this work in multi-fandom?
- If your character has magical powers, I'm going to say Maxim will be able to tell if they're Dark - see above for 'what is Dark' - this doesn't mean your character's an evil guy, btw. Vampires are automatically Dark. No matter of what they've done or why. If you don't want him to know this/your character has massive blocking abilities of this kind of thing, that's just fine.
- His 'mirror' ability won't be any use unless someone from his canon shows. Because he needs to enter the Twilight.
- he can still enter the Twilight, but as said, very little use when he's on his own.
- If you fit in the 'Dark' catagory - he might no longer decide to kill you from the off, but he'll consider it. And that dagger WILL kill you. Doesn't mean you can't defend yourself against him, etc etc. But that dagger is poison - think a vampire and a crucifix, or exorcising a demon. That kind of thing.
- He can make himself invisible to regular joe humans, but probably won't - Others only tend to enter the Twilight when they've got business with other Others. If none are around, it's unlikely to happen.
He's Daniel Craig? Yes, he's Daniel Craig.
Ask anything else you've got in the comments. I'll do my best to answer 'em.
